freitz Posted September 20, 2014 Share #1 Posted September 20, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I did a search and did not find a good thread on this. But I am curious did you pick the Black Paint or the Silver Chrome of the M240 and why?
Advertisement Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 Hi freitz, Take a look here Chrome Vs Black Paint. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mfunnell Posted September 20, 2014 Share #2 Posted September 20, 2014 Black paint, simply because I like the look of it better. And because black electrician's tape to cover the red dot and the M is easier to find than silver tape ...Mike
SiriusLux Posted September 20, 2014 Share #3 Posted September 20, 2014 Chrome because: 1) It is a bare metal surface (chrome plated brass) and as a mechanical engineer I like the feel of bare metal, the same goes for a MACbook vs. a painted PC, 2) Because the metal lasts longer than the paint. If the M was available in the black chrome the MM comes in, I would have probably taken the black one.
A Almulla Posted September 20, 2014 Share #4 Posted September 20, 2014 When I wanted to buy my M240 I also looked and after reading many threads I wanted to go with a black due to being "inconspicuous" even though it didn't make much sense. A guy standing there bringing his camera up to his face to shoot, black or not didn't make sense, even for street. Then when I heard a dealer close to where I was at the time had a camera I rushed and asked and it seems the only one available was a silver. My decision was made for me irrespective of what I intended. I don't regret it and I still find the choice of colour to be more personal than for any other reason. Guest odeon Posted September 20, 2014 Share #5 Posted September 20, 2014 I should be first to tell about the difference... The black takes better photos.
Cyril Jayant Posted September 21, 2014 Share #6 Posted September 21, 2014 I should be first to tell about the difference... The black takes better photos. I Choose Silver metal as it make better photos for me . That is my lucky finish in Leica..
Echo63 Posted September 21, 2014 Share #7 Posted September 21, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Black paint, because i prefer black paint. My M is intended to be a long term photographic companion (3-5yrs before an upgrade, where it will still be kept as a second body/backup) And i like the idea of it slowly brassing, becoming uniquely mine
Herr Barnack Posted September 21, 2014 Share #8 Posted September 21, 2014 (edited) I chose black. I just like the look of black rangefinder cameras. Also a factor is that my M lenses are black; therefore getting my M240 in black was the natural choice. While black is in theory more stealthy than chrome, I don't think that in real world situations it matters much. I have discovered that the masses of people who are not serious, committed photographers are unbelievably inobservant as they go about life in their cloud. YMMV. Exodies Posted September 21, 2014 Share #9 Posted September 21, 2014 I had a preference for silver but would have taken whatever was available.
illuminatus Posted September 21, 2014 Share #10 Posted September 21, 2014 The black one looks nice and will eventually have nice patina, but I am not sure I would like it on mine. I started with a chrome MP and build a chrome lens collection. A chrome lens on a black body doesn't look good in my opinion, so I settled with a chrome M 240. ayewing Posted September 21, 2014 Share #11 Posted September 21, 2014 I prefer chrome perhaps for nostalgic reasons as my first Leica was a second hand chrome M2 which I bought in the 1970s.
CheshireCat Posted September 22, 2014 Share #12 Posted September 22, 2014 Given the fact that my M locks up more often on hot sunny days, I wonder if black was the right choice.
Verteidiger Posted September 25, 2014 Share #13 Posted September 25, 2014 Repeating what I wrote in another thread on this before: You can combine black lenses as well as silver lenses only with a silver body. With a black body on the other hand silver lenses will never work. Anything else is a matter of taste.
pico Posted September 25, 2014 Share #14 Posted September 25, 2014 Is it really black paint/enamel or just the dull, crap 'black chrome'? .
epand56 Posted September 26, 2014 Share #15 Posted September 26, 2014 I've got the silver because I'm an old fashioned and nostalgic guy
bocaburger Posted September 26, 2014 Share #16 Posted September 26, 2014 I wanted a chrome M9 but all they had till the P was that horrid battleship gray paint so of course I took a black one. When I saw a chrome M240 demo I grabbed it. The only place a guy with any Leica up to his eye is inconspicuous is in a Leica store.
NZDavid Posted September 27, 2014 Share #17 Posted September 27, 2014 ...My M is intended to be a long term photographic companion (3-5yrs before an upgrade, where it will still be kept as a second body/backup)... That's longterm? I suppose it must be in the digital age.
furcafe Posted September 29, 2014 Share #18 Posted September 29, 2014 Based on a friend's camera, it's definitely paint, not "black chrome" like on an old M4-P. Personally, I went for chrome because I think it looks better, it's more durable, & it matches my other Leicas. Is it really black paint/enamel or just the dull, crap 'black chrome'?. tookaphotoof Posted September 29, 2014 Share #19 Posted September 29, 2014 That's longterm? I suppose it must be in the digital age. Personally, if my M8.2 was still ok, I wouldn't have thought about upgrading to the M240, although I do find it has it advantages (especially in less ideal light situations). I don't think I'll be upgrading for as long as the it keeps on working. I'm satisfied now, so why wouldn't I 5 years into the 'future'... About the black paint, I don't know when and how I got the top plate against something less forgiving, but it scraped a bit of black of it. Black paint for sure. John Ricard Posted September 30, 2014 Share #20 Posted September 30, 2014 Black. Looks more modern. Chrome looks like an old camera to me.
