Advertisement Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Hi A miller, Take a look here Why wasn't the new 28mm summilux announced at PK?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted September 16, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted September 16, 2014 Good point. Maybe that's been held back for next year (Leica now seem to like to introduce products at a spring/summer launch held between Photokina years)?
A miller Posted September 16, 2014 Author Share #3 Â Posted September 16, 2014 Thanks Very strnge since they have already disclosed the lens publicly. You'd think tht could have t least revealed some further nuggets of detail. Instead we got some mid-range summarits...

hoppyman Posted September 17, 2014 Share #8 Â Posted September 17, 2014 Or there is no conspiracy or wilful manipulation of the market and it is just not ready for serial production as yet
John Black Posted September 18, 2014 Share #9 Â Posted September 18, 2014 Read elsewhere that the lens is coming, but the production line needed to be configured first.
A miller Posted September 18, 2014 Author Share #10 Â Posted September 18, 2014 Understood but that is really irrelevant to a PK launch, which doesn't require a fully baked cake. I am aware that prototypes are available.

hoppyman Posted September 18, 2014 Share #12 Â Posted September 18, 2014 The lens was already announced /revealed (in the Leica M Edition 100 set) of course as part of the Centennial celebrations. Evidently it is just not ready for serial production with the body/mechanism constructed from normal materials (instead of the solid stainless steel). Â So you could buy it now if you had deep enough pockets, could find one of the 101 sets offered and you would get two cameras, two other matching Summiluxes and a roll of Tri-X thrown in :D:D
A miller Posted September 18, 2014 Author Share #13 Â Posted September 18, 2014 The special edition silver edition was indeed revealed, but w/o any real specs to speak of. Â The noctilux and 35mm lux fle have been revealed for many years now; one might have thought that no special "revelation" would be necessary just b/c they added a silver edition. Â It is just curious that they didn't create a prototype black version for purposes of displaying at PK and discuss more of the technical aspects of the lens as well as the expected price. Â I'm thinking that this lens could have the most buzz of any new lens since perhaps the nocti 0.95....
hoppyman Posted September 19, 2014 Share #14 Â Posted September 19, 2014 There is a big difference between making available versions of current lenses with different finishes and manufacturing a serial production version of a very low volume collectors item though. Personally I would surprised if it does not appear in serial production when they are able of course. Â The 28 , 35 and 50 Summilux lenses in the Leica M Edition 100 sets have the bodies manufactured from solid stainless steel ( as are the camera bodies). Machining and tolerances, processes and costs working with solid stainless steel like that are quite different from applying different finishes to the conventional brass or other alloy bodies. Were they to show a prototype but have no prospect of serial production in the very near future you can be sure that there would be discontent and frustration by many in on-line discussion like this. "damned if you do and damned if you don't" I think applies. Â Just my opinion. I think that they were simply not close enough to serial production to make that announcement and they did after all have a number of new products to talk about, following on from the Centennial announcements earlier. That event was arguably more important and significant than Photokina this year, after all (or any other Leica milestone for a century).

A miller Posted September 21, 2014 Author Share #17 Â Posted September 21, 2014 I was told by a senior official of Leica NY to think 24mm lux when thinking about this lens.
luigi bertolotti Posted September 21, 2014 Share #18 Â Posted September 21, 2014 Does anyone know the dimensions and filter size of 28mm lux? Â Unveiled, afaik... from the pictures the main body looks to have a diameter a little larger than 24 (judging by the tapered end) , but maybe a bit shorter (curiosly, it hasn't the usual dual scale feet/meters... only meters) ; I'd bet for 72mm filter. jaapv Posted September 21, 2014 Share #20 Â Posted September 21, 2014 Maybe launch date in spring 2015, new Monochrom based on typ 240 with Summilux 28mm My bet is that we won't see a 240-based MM as long as the M240 is in production.
