New Summarits

I'm much more interested in their performance, primarily the 2.4/35. That it's an E46 doesn't bother me that much

I bought the 2.5/35 Summarit as a compact 35 for when I didn't want to take the Summilux FLE. Although the IQ was overall very nice the corners were just too soft. At that time I wasn't using a 35 enough to justify two lenses so I sold the Summarit and never missed it

Lets see what Leica have done with this new lens. This and the new D-Lux are the only new Leica products I might be interested in. Survived Photokina 2014 GAS.

I have all 39 mm filter lenses except for 75 APO and 21 2.8. I do not want to buy a new pola filter. An odd filter or so does not bother me. But polas are big money.

I think I will midling along with my 35 V4 for some time.

Identical optical formula as your dearly departed Summarit. As are all the new Summarits. They squeezed a tad more light with manufacturing changes. Tighter tolerances. Always hated the font on these lenses but that 35 can't be beat for its gentler rendering and absence of focus shift. Nice companion for a Monochrome.

Might I recommend the ZM 2,8/35 for a compact 35 with a different look than the FLE?

Thanks James,

If the optical formula is identical then I'm not interested.

I agree with the bad-look of the front of the old Summarit but it did have that excellent new hood system. Used it on the Monochrom & M9, and yes it did have that nice mix of 'new and old' rendering.

I considered the 2.8/35 as I quite like the ZM lenses but it's supposed to be a very high-contrast lens.

Can't wait to have a look at them at photokina.

Let us (me) know how the new 75 Summarit M looks and feels when extended to the new minimum focus distance of 0.7 meters. At all wobbly, or a feeling of simply being pushed too far mechanically? Any significant IQ loss at the new minimum?

The limited close focus in the original version was the main objection I had to this lens - I could go crazy for one if it really gets in as close as the Summicron APO. Especially in the studio.

Given the move to 46mm filter threads with the new Summarits, I am surprised that other recent introductions like the 90mm macro elmar lens did not have enlarged filter diameters. Leica could once again standardize on a common filter thread across most of their lenses, as with 39mm filters in the past. Nick

Yes, the silver 75 and 90 lenses don't look so great.

They are the Panda versions

Great timing. I'm probably gonna get a 90mm f/2.4 Summarit for the few situations I would need such a focal length. My 50 and 35 covers 80% of what I would want to capture, with the rest being spread between a 15mm and 90mm. No reason to get the APO-Summicron for such a limited use. To big and heavy to carry around while almost never being used. And the Summarit has the same E46 filter thread as my 35 and 50 Lux, which I already have 3 and 6 stop ND filters for, as well as polarizers and protection filters!

Sure thing Andy. I will have a look and post back. I am very interested in these lenses too.

cheers

The old summarits were also f2.4 (Erwin Puts) however Leica was very conservative in their designation.

So the old Summarits were just mislabeled? And the new ones are the same optical formula, but manufactured better? I don't quite understand whether the new manufacturing allows more light through the lens, or allows the lens to be more accurately labelled.

The exact term is "overengineering" (good), and now marketing is taking advantage of that (bad).
