This isn't as romantically pretty as other views of Berkeley's parks, but it gives credit to those who've supported nature with a helpful measure of artifice.

We think of this as a 'nature area,' and not far from this site is an official Nature Center. But it's also a built environment. To begin with, this old water system dates from 1922. Then the trails and the strong, well-integrated rockwork were created during the Depression by the CCC (and in the city parks, by the WPA). Now the facilities like this bridge are maintained and periodically rebuilt by the Regional Park District. So nature has already had lots of help from art, 'way back then' – before our cameras arrive to take pictures.
