Advertisement Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Hi Jean-Michel, Take a look here filter ring repair option?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
darylgo Posted August 19, 2014 Share #22 Â Posted August 19, 2014 If the lens was purchased new in the US, Leica NJ provides a 3 year passport protection that includes drops. Re: insurance, insuring for less than full value is beneficial, the post office treats it the same as full insurance with signatures on the receiving end. With warranty items a call to Leica and a courteous request for a shipping label is always kindly provided, perhaps non-warranted also. Â It's sad to see the lens in it's current state. byroncheung Posted August 19, 2014 Author Share #23 Â Posted August 19, 2014 i checked my homeowner insurance it cover theft etc but not accident like this so i'll have to foot the bill. Â all my gears are bought used. the body is probably > 3 year old, but the lens have a slim hope to be less then 3 year old, i have to dug out the box and warranty card to be sure. as long as i have the warranty card and it's < 3 year old, i have the warranty coverage even i'm the 2nd owner? You generally need to schedule your camera equipment to have what I call "idiot" coverage when you drop it and it is damaged. This can vary by insurance carriers and where you are located. As far as whether you can get passport coverage as the second owner, I am not sure. You might need to have a receipt when it was originally sold. byroncheung Posted August 21, 2014 Author Share #25 Â Posted August 21, 2014 Just to report back - dag offers to straighten the filter ring for $45, sherry offers to replace the filter ring for $185, leica nj won't give any estimate until I send it in... I guess I should still send to leica, thinking they might be more throughout in making sure things are aligned after the fall etc? Â Also leica confirmed warrant won't cover used product, it apply to the first buyer only... Doesn't make sense to me but it is what it is, just want to share to those don't know about this. marknorton Posted August 21, 2014 Share #26 Â Posted August 21, 2014 Does the Leica warranty cover accidental damage anyway? I know our Passport scheme in the UK does but it's for one year only. Â It's easy to focus on the visible damage and what that costs to fix/replace, not a lot in my experience. It's the potential damage underneath which is the concern which is why you should return both camera and lens to Leica. Â As for shipping, I agree the cost of insurance is ridiculous, I'm not in the US but when I ship items to Solms/Wetzlar, I don't bother with insurance and just use DHL. He will tell you if he is unable to address the problem. If you send the lens to him, ask for an estimate, if it doesn't need additional work you have a very reasonable repair. Leica is very thorough, sometimes unnecessarily so when my request is simply adjustment to focus they will tear down the lens. Although nice to have such great care I am not sure it contributes to a better or improved optic.
byroncheung Posted August 21, 2014 Author Share #28 Â Posted August 21, 2014 i agree DAG is superb - he has helped me before on focus calibration and i was very happy with his communication, turn around time and quality of work. Â i'm going to send it to leica this time because people talked about potential sensor misalignment etc., instilled some fear in me . i guess it's good give the system a throughout check / clean / fix up once a while... But I guess when you are really waiting it could be annoying. Only upside is at the mean time I go back to my contax G2 to shoot film and it has been an interesting experience to rekindle the love for film...
