byroncheung Posted August 18, 2014 Share #1  Posted August 18, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) My M9 and summilux 35mm suffered a 1 meter fall from a bench. Too bad I wasn't using the lens hood when it happened so the filter ring had a pretty bad dent. The range finder maybe slightly off but not too bad.  Anyone has experience on repair on filter ring like this? What options are there? I imagine it will be expensive to replace the filter ring? Maybe cheaper to straighten the filter ring somehow? I found these tools one ebay anyone has experience with them? Advertisement Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Hi byroncheung, Take a look here filter ring repair option?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
madNbad Posted August 18, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted August 18, 2014 Looks like your Summilux is taking a vacation in Wetzlar and bringing your credit card with it.
250swb Posted August 18, 2014 Share #3 Â Posted August 18, 2014 I think you'd probably get the filter ring to be round again with the repair tool, but the threads will be deformed and would probably need dressing which would be the technical part of the job. As a firm advocate of DIY, in this case I say send it to Wetzlar. Â Steve
jaapv Posted August 18, 2014 Share #4 Â Posted August 18, 2014 Even if you were able to screw the filter into the deformed threads, it would never be possible to screw it out again.
byroncheung Posted August 18, 2014 Author Share #5 Â Posted August 18, 2014 i'm in US do i have to send it directly to Wetzlar? or Leica NJ will be able to do a repair job like this? i sort of remember seeing other people's comments on service in NJ not being so great? pgk Posted August 18, 2014 Share #6 Â Posted August 18, 2014 Is the focus still smooth? Looks to me like a replacement filter ring will be needed as this impact has deformed the existing one substantially. When I dropped the same model lens the filter smashed and saved the filter ring but there was internal damage which showed up as a tight spot during focusing and it went back to Solms and was returned in immaculate condition - you would never know it had suffered any damage at all. Given the value of the lens its worth getting it sorted out properly - via NJ who will no doubt either be able to deal with it themselves or will ship it to Wetzlar if they deem this necessary. Â Whilst you could DIY the visual result will substantially devalue the lens even if it continues to operate ok. Whether this worries you only you know. Erik Gunst Lund Posted August 18, 2014 Share #7 Â Posted August 18, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Both lens and camerea needs full check and repair for this type of impact IMHO
jaapv Posted August 18, 2014 Share #8 Â Posted August 18, 2014 Good point. I did this once with less obvious damage and not only the filter ring was bent, there was damage to the focusing mechanism and the sensor was knocked out of alignment. spydrxx Posted August 18, 2014 Share #9 Â Posted August 18, 2014 Several years ago I had a similar issue. DAG did a great job of putting everything back in order, and focusing was as smooth as ever.
byroncheung Posted August 18, 2014 Author Share #10 Â Posted August 18, 2014 thanks for all the replies. Â the focusing mechanism is still smooth. however it does seem to back-focus slightly, i don't know if it's the rangefinder mechanism is knocked out of alignment, or sensor are off... Â jaapv where did you have your repair done in leica last time? or you went DAG or somewhere else?
byroncheung Posted August 18, 2014 Author Share #11 Â Posted August 18, 2014 also can i get some feedbacks on what carrier services people use for shipping and what sort of insurance they get (ship out from US)? Â last time i shipped my m9 and 2 summiluxes to DAG for focus calibration using UPS, i checked the insurance if i want to insure for full value it was so expensive i ended up just didn't get any insurance and took the risk. just want to see if there are better options out there. mmradman Posted August 18, 2014 Share #12 Â Posted August 18, 2014 Question to original poster; do you have household or equipment insurance, you may need it. I suspect damage is more than just cosmetic and cost of any repair or replacement would exceed excess on typical insurance policy.
byroncheung Posted August 18, 2014 Author Share #13 Â Posted August 18, 2014 Mladen, Â i do have a home ownership insurance but no equipment specific insurance. i suspect i might get some reimbursement through it, something i'm going to check, thanks for reminding! Leica offer a 'collect' courier service here in the UK (and Europe?). It might be worth checking with them as to whether they do so in the USA. And s sensor alignment certainly is.
madNbad Posted August 18, 2014 Share #16 Â Posted August 18, 2014 I have to agree with Jaap. There may be some internal damage or at the least some misalignment. Start by using the Leica website and download a repair request. There are forms for both U.S. and the repair center in Wetzlar. A third party may be capable of repairing your lens but the factory technicians have the parts and the proper equipment for element alignment and calibration. Shipping in the U.S. can be either through commercial carrier or USPS. Hope we have been of assistance.
byroncheung Posted August 18, 2014 Author Share #17 Â Posted August 18, 2014 the discussion has indeed been helpful thanks for all the inputs. i guess most likely what i will do is to send both the m9 and the broken 35mm summilux, together with my other lenses all to leica US for fixing and a round of calibration... Â Before sending anywhere check with your insurer first, you may be able to recoup significant amount or even get replacement value. Â I had similar mishap with Zeiss M 25mm, household insurer made own assessment and declared lens write-off, I got value of new item minus excess which was more than I paid for Item S/H, it was nice contribution towards new SEM 21mm
byroncheung Posted August 18, 2014 Author Share #19 Â Posted August 18, 2014 ok good to know Mladen. lets see if the US insurance companies are as generous as the UK ones.
Bill W Posted August 18, 2014 Share #20 Â Posted August 18, 2014 I would email a picture to DAG (Don Goldberg) and ask his opinion. He will most likely be less than Leica NJ and maybe a little quicker on turnaround. FWIW
