Pre-APO Summicron-R 90 -- weight difference between versions

The Apo-R is only 20g heavier but 19mm shorter than its M counterpart. Would be great on a R10 but the need for an adapter would ruin the size argument on the M240 i guess.

It's surprisingly compact on the M240 with M-R and in my opinion seemed more compact even with the M/R adaptor than its sister lens the 90/2 APO-Summicron-M asph. (But then having to use the EVF for the R version makes it less desirable on the M.)

Being apparently the same lens i would have thought that the length of the apo-R + adapter is roughly (or perhaps exactly) the same as that of the apo-M alone but i don't own the former so i rely on you my friend. I have not the pre-apo M and R with me here but i will compare them out of curosity when i'm back home.

I find the same with the R 80 vs the M 75. The R at 700 grams is almost 200 grams heavier than my v3 German M 75, which is 520 grams, but the former feels better in hand because it's fatter and has more even weight distribution--less front heavy. Actually the R 80 is probably my favorite lens as an object to hold and, alas, fondle! The added articulation of an adapter also makes the lens seem more compact--your eye associates the adapter with the camera, not the lens.

If I were to get the M version again I'd pick the first version without built-in hood.

Having had the APO M 90, pre-APO M 90 v3, and R90 v2 e55, I think I'd probably feel the same about the 90's... Too bad the APO R is so much of a collector's item.

Hello,

Can someone explain me the difference between the lens versions of the Leica R 90 f2.0 before 1977 and those after 1977 -(1970-1977: with 1-piece built-in lens hood / 1977-2000 with 2-piece built-in lens hood)?

Second question what are the difference between the versions 11219 and 11254 of this lens?

Thanks!

I have no experience with 11254 but AFAIK:
• 11219 is the early version with 2-piece built-in hood, E55 or Series 7 filters
• 11254 is the late version with 1-piece built-in hood, E55 filters
Both have the same optics AFAIK but i may be wrong.
