Washington Posted July 22, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 22, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) After 63 years of of faithful SERVICE my Double-Stroke M-3 has finally succumbed to Viewfinder glue separation. Can someone recommend the right person to restore the original viewfinder? Welcome, dear visitor! luigi bertolotti Posted July 22, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 22, 2014 I suppose the internal viewfinder... ... not the glass into the googles of that fine Summicron... In USA (obviously i haven't direct experience about) there is the often quoted DAG - Dan Goldberg, who seems to be the top repairer for delicate components... TomB_tx Posted July 22, 2014 Share #3 Posted July 22, 2014 DAG is about the best - but often has quite a backlog. I've also had good work done by Youxin Ye, and re-cementing M rangefinders is one of the services he advertises. YYeCAMERA
spydrxx Posted July 22, 2014 Share #4 Posted July 22, 2014 I've had good experiences with DAG (long waits however), Youxin Ye (quick), and Sherrie Krauter (did my last Mr VF replacement).
Michael Geschlecht Posted July 22, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 22, 2014 Hello Rip, Sorry to hear about your range/viewfinder problems. The range/viewfinder diagram you included with the photo of your camera/lens is the diagram for a 0.72X optical range/viewfinder system. Essentially what is used in M's 2, 4, 5, & so on. Up to & including today's MP & M7. The 0.91X range/viewfinder optical system of an M3 is somewhat different. Speedy Recovery & Best Regards, Michael
Washington Posted July 22, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted July 22, 2014 Absolutely Weird. Having not looked throng the M-3 Viewfinder in a very long time today I did and it's absolutely fine.... clear as a bell!!!???. If you leave old Leica's alone for awhile do they fix themselves? Now, what do you think is going on here?????

Michael Geschlecht Posted July 22, 2014 Share #8 Posted July 22, 2014 Hello Rip, What was wrong when the view thru the range/viewfinder was not correct? What is the difference now? Best Regards, Michael
Washington Posted July 22, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted July 22, 2014 Michael, The rangefinder had gone dark to the point of uselessness and no focusing window at all. I understood from reading about this common problem that it was due to the old cements degrading over time and optics just falling apart.
gyoung Posted July 22, 2014 Share #10 Posted July 22, 2014 A finger over the small rf window? Gerry
Washington Posted July 22, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted July 22, 2014 gypung, That's a good one but no that is not the case. I actually watched the finder slowly degrade into uselessness..... so why it's fine now is like magic or something. Now, I am just really excited about using it so I have to find out what's a good B&W film these days as the last film I used was Kodak Plus-X and Tri-X and find a good place to have it developed as I have one of those great Nikon 35mm film scanner. Washington Posted July 23, 2014 Author Share #12 Posted July 23, 2014 Update on the old M-3, As i live in the Hudson Valley now running up to Sherry Krauter's place is just a nice ride. I have written to her for permission to do so, and have her give the old girl a good going over.... I do not think this camera has ever had a professional C.L.A. Yup, it's time to do film again.
