Mike Rawcs Posted July 15, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 15, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've not installed the new firmware yet but I saw that one of the fixes was for bugs in dust detection. Does anyone know what the bugs are (were)? I seem to be either moving dust around the sensor - or am I moving bugs?!! Mike.
Advertisement Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Hi Mike Rawcs, Take a look here New firmware and dust detection. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jbl Posted July 15, 2014 Share #2 Posted July 15, 2014 I think it was a bug fix around the sensor cleaning mode. There's no dust detection in camera from what I can tell. Just so you know, installing the firmware update will reset all settings on the camera so backup your settings to a memory card first. (I didn't). jip Posted July 15, 2014 Share #3 Posted July 15, 2014 There is dust detection, it shows you where the dust is located on the sensor... The camera itself cannot do anything with the data but it does have dust detection as a helpful tool when cleaning the sensor. I don't know what the bugs are or were, and I have not cleaned my sensor yet on my M240 since I got it, only used a rocket blower once but no wet cleaning needed yet. drdannn Posted July 15, 2014 Share #4 Posted July 15, 2014 I have cleaned the sensor, but as soon as I put the camera in live view and change it back again, there is dust on the sensor apparently from the chamber ( so says the dust detection). The good news is that the dust detection of the M is very sensitive and when it shows a little dust, it may very well not show up on your photos. I no longer use the dust detection in camera mode. When I see dust on my images I just clean the sensor. Easy.
250swb Posted July 15, 2014 Share #5 Posted July 15, 2014 This feature of dust detection is a simple response from Leica to people who don't have prior experience of cleaning their sensor. Previously (like with an M9) just stopping the lens down to f/16 and pointing the camera at the sky will reveal the significant dust, increasing contrast of that image will reveal all the dust. So it isn't worth reading anything into whatever the camera says in the dust detection image, you can do it yourself in a more realistic way that works within normal expectations of cleanliness. jbl Posted July 15, 2014 Share #6 Posted July 15, 2014 That's what I've always done. I didn't know there was a dust detection mode, but I'll probably stick with the sky method.
rafael_macia Posted July 15, 2014 Share #7 Posted July 15, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) In addition to pointing the camera to a clear part of sky and setting the aperture to F16, I would also recommend using a 90mm lens for the job and setting the focus on the lens to it's closest setting. wlaidlaw Posted July 17, 2014 Share #8 Posted July 17, 2014 It may be my imagination but getting the dust detection to work seems easier. I usually use an Expodisc but even so, you used to have to have a fairly evenly illuminated sky. Now I seem to get dust detection screen first time every time and I can’t put it down to Provençal skies, as the weather has been horrible this year until the last few days.
