biglouis Posted July 15, 2014 Share #1 Posted July 15, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sitting as one does on the beach at Hayling Island I was surprised to detect the throaty roar that can only be associated with a Spitfire coming from the direction of Chichester. Sure enough after a couple of minutes, not just one but two Spitfires (late variants by the shape of the wings and the number of prop blades) came roaring over the entrance to Chichester harbour between the tip of Sandy Point and the Witterings. They then proceeded to put on a beautiful display of aerobatics. Unfortunately, I don't travel with a 600mm lens and gimbal tripod so the best I could do was whip out my Elmarit 90mm and shoot as best I could. Still the unmistakable outline is there plus the D-Day markings on the wings of one of them. Welcome, dear visitor! platypus Posted July 20, 2014 Share #6 Posted July 20, 2014 When I was flying (a long time ago) we used to call the vertical manoeuvre in the second shot "hanging by the prop".....love your shots and the narrative, it's so wonderful that these beautiful machines have been preserved and are still airworthy. It was great to see, I thought he/she was going for a full loop but at the top they turned over in a roll and came back down right side up. How on earth pilots did all this with enemy aircraft on their tail trying to shoot them down has always amazed me as someone with no knowledge of flying, LouisB
