srv333 Posted July 13, 2014 Author Share #21  Posted July 13, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Which camera were you using? Which means of focus - RF, live-view? The box top is still getting sharper all the way to the "Kellogg's" logo - looks like your point of absolute focus may have not been on the box at all, but at or past the end.  Was using RF for focus. I can say that I did hit focus because I also tried my 35mm and received a completely different result. Of course, I understand the 24 vs 35 but the differences are night and day!!! Thanks for the input!
Advertisement Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 Hi srv333, Take a look here 24mm 1.4 Summilux. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Numbers Posted July 13, 2014 Share #22 Â Posted July 13, 2014 You could send an email and a picture directly to Leica. IME they are very good at responding. It could be your sample that needs a service.
CheshireCat Posted July 13, 2014 Share #23 Â Posted July 13, 2014 I think what I should do is find someone locally that has this lens and try both on my body and compare the results... Â I don't think it is the body. Either user error or a bad lens.
jaapv Posted July 13, 2014 Share #24 Â Posted July 13, 2014 That is not normal. I really hope it is just user error.I never tried a 24 Lux, but most El-Cheapo modern 24/1.4 lenses are better than that on the axis. Â It looks in no way like the way mine draws. @ 1.4 there is a narrow plane of focus that is tack-sharp in the centre falling off slightly to the corners. The shot posted looks most like motion blur to me. 1/125 is really not enough to stop all motion blur always. Focus tests should be made using a heavy tripod. Â I've been shooting for years and can get pretty sharp images at slower speeds but just for the sake of "scientific" results, I'll try on tripod with cable release. Â Thanks to all for your input thus far!
Malvolio Posted July 14, 2014 Share #26 Â Posted July 14, 2014 Would second Jaaps suggestion for a retest on a tripod and focus bracketing. Rule out user error first
CheshireCat Posted July 14, 2014 Share #27  Posted July 14, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Would second Jaaps suggestion for a retest on a tripod and focus bracketing. Rule out user error first  Focus bracketing is not needed, if the subject is - say - a newspaper on a table at 45 degrees to the sensor plane. Be sure to use a tripod and shutter self-timer to rule out any possible vibration. Also, set the minimum ISO for your camera to minimize sensor noise. srv333 Posted July 19, 2014 Author Share #28  Posted July 19, 2014 Finally had a chance to set the camera up on a tripod and give it a real test...  First one wide open and second one at 5.6  and of course straight out of camera.  Thoughts? Samir Jahjah Posted July 19, 2014 Share #29 Â Posted July 19, 2014 It doesn't look right to me, mine would be very sharp in the center even at 1.4. Try Live view to focus and if it still is blurry at 1.4, I would call Leica or talk to your dealer.
Malvolio Posted July 19, 2014 Share #30 Â Posted July 19, 2014 Agreed. Doesn't look like it's right. Perhaps an element in the lens has shifted etx

First one wide open and second one at 5.6  and of course straight out of camera.  Thoughts?  Uhm... please focus in the middle of the "Nutrition Facts" table. The focus could be behind the subject. Only the f/1.4 shot is needed.  P.S. A flat and wider subject like a newspaper would be much better.

If I used a news paper I could not get it to lay completely flat due to the folds.  Maybe I'll try a ruler...  Thanks all!

jaapv Posted July 20, 2014 Share #35 Â Posted July 20, 2014 Best tested with a computer monitor at 45 degrees. The moire will indicate exact focus.
otto.f Posted July 20, 2014 Share #36 Â Posted July 20, 2014 If one shoots wide open as a diversion for a lack of talent, it shows right away. Â  What is this more than just boasting?
srv333 Posted July 20, 2014 Author Share #37 Â Posted July 20, 2014 :confused:What is this more than just boasting? Â I usually ignore these things... Talent has nothing to do with which aperture I select...
srv333 Posted July 20, 2014 Author Share #38 Â Posted July 20, 2014 Best tested with a computer monitor at 45 degrees. The moire will indicate exact focus. Â Curious how this will differ? Any random screen display or is there pdf style sheets that are designed for this type of test? Â Thanks
srv333 Posted July 22, 2014 Author Share #39 Â Posted July 22, 2014 I think it would just be best for me to send it in to Leica to have them take a look at it. Unless others feel this is "normal" for such lens. I have had a lens off to Leica NJ for 4 months though and my faith in turn around time is out the window!!! Joakim Posted July 23, 2014 Share #40  Posted July 23, 2014 Below is a test shot I took at MFD and wide open, focus on the word 'Fortnox' next to the arrow. It's not perfect but very good for such a fast and wide leach and in more real situations it doesn't disappoint The second photo is wide open or very close to it. Welcome, dear visitor!
