Rva Posted June 22, 2014 Share #1 Posted June 22, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just came back from vacation and I am really surprised how fabulous 21 SEM is. I got a sharp shot at whatever aperture, beautiful rendering. I was wandering if someone made comparison 21 SEM and 21 Elmarit 2.8. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Hi Rva, Take a look here SEM 21mm. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
DigitalHeMan Posted June 22, 2014 Share #2 Posted June 22, 2014 Nice shots. It is a great lens. I looked at the two lenses, at least on paper, and preferred the SEM for the simple reason that it used the same 46mm filters as my other lenses. The Elmarit ASPH uses 55mm
srv333 Posted June 22, 2014 Share #3 Posted June 22, 2014 I've been battling in my mind this lens or the 24mm 3.8 lens.
stevesurf Posted June 22, 2014 Share #4 Posted June 22, 2014 Wonderful shots, RVA, I just recently got mine, and originally for a trip planned to Yellowstone, I decided to try it out early in San Diego. Glad I did - a wonderful lens.

mirekti Posted June 23, 2014 Share #6 Posted June 23, 2014 I very shortly owned 21SEM, ended up with 24 elmar. Both are great lenses, but 24mm better suits my needs.

Herr Barnack Posted June 24, 2014 Share #8 Posted June 24, 2014 I've been battling in my mind this lens or the 24mm 3.8 lens. I went with the Super Elmar 21/3.4, but then I also chose the Summicron 28/2 ASPH over the 35/2 ASPH. I like the extra bit of coverage the 28mm gives me over the 35mm, which allows me to get closer to my subjects while still including a nice sized background for context. I went with the 21/3.4 ASPH; I just like the 21mm angle of view. The extra 0.4 EV at the maximum aperture was also a factor. The 21mm gives me an significantly wider chunk of real estate compared to the 28mm. Many like the 24mm, but I felt it was a bit too close to my 28 'cron in terms of angle of view. YMMV on that point. My verdict on the Super Elmar 21 ASPH is that it is simply outstanding. It produces staggering image quality and is just a treat to shoot with. My verdict on the Super Elmar 21 ASPH is that it is simply outstanding. It produces staggering image quality and is just a treat to shoot with. I have at 28 and a 35 but have not touched the 28 ever since I picked up the 35. 24 is nice but not wide enough... I think i'll end up with the 21 3.4 At the end of the day, no match which one I end up with 21 or 24 both will help me produce great images... For the last 12 months I mostly brought 21-35 and 1 or 2 longer lenses (50/75 and/or sometimes 135). Its really a matter of taste.
xdayv Posted June 24, 2014 Share #11 Posted June 24, 2014 I'm eyeing this as my next lens. Compact UWA and takes 46mm filter.
newnew Posted June 25, 2014 Share #12 Posted June 25, 2014 Before my purchase of the SEM , I have tried the Zeiss 21mm and also the Leica 21/2.8. I do not regret any moment the price difference. Clean colors, rich shades, very nice to the eye sharpness and distorsion free . It is a magic lens... Welcome, dear visitor! Jennifer Posted June 26, 2014 Share #13 Posted June 26, 2014 The front element of my 6 month old SEM 21 suddenly started rattling for no apparent reason . The Leica Store, Mayfair have sent it back to Germany for adjustment. Although I've been promised it back within 20 working days and obviously it's still under warranty, I do wonder why they can't provide for these minor repairs to be undertaken locally? Leica Mayfair has had my 28mm f/2 Summicron-M ASPH for 35 working days so far and cannot currently give me an expected return date. Same problem loose front element. I'm told the abnormal delay is caused by the move back to Wetzlar.
Numbers Posted June 26, 2014 Share #15 Posted June 26, 2014 You should consider the summer holidays coming up. it could be a long wait then. I had my entire kit adjusted under warranty about a month ago. I asked for a time estimate and was quoted 5 weeks. There is an express fee - and for 5 working days its very fair. (there is an even faster one but a bit pricey)The Camera and three lenses came back perfect and repair time was 4 days with excellent track and trace updates during the work. I dealt with Leica directly as my (ex) retailer is never nothing but excuses. I think Leicas service was superb!
