DigitalHeMan Posted June 21, 2014 Author Share #22  Posted June 21, 2014 So to update the thread......  I went to the dealer today and tried out the Macro-Elmar and two Summicron 90mm APO samples.  I started with the Macro-Elmar, and the results were excellent. Very sharp, contrasty images, focusing spot on, and acceptable bokeh for an f/4 lens. Good close up as well, and the macro adapter seems to do the job well, albeit a bit of a hassle to attach, and, unlike the new May 2014 macro adapter, you lose infinity focus, and can effectively only focus from ±50-80cm when attached. The lens hood and lens cap are also a bit of a fiddle, and when the hood is attached the whole setup is quite big, but it works.  I then tried the two APO lenses, and to be honest I was not impressed. The lens feels very nice, and balances well on the camera, but I felt focusing was slightly off on both examples that I tried (one more so than the other). In fact I was able to get much sharper results on my old unwieldy type II Summicron from 1973, which obviously should not be the case. So whether it was sample variation, my technique, or my rangefinder, it didn't feel right, so I excluded both lenses.  So basically, the Macro-Elmar delivered the quality of results I am looking for, it's a small package, but considering it's the same price second hand as the APO, which is f/2 vs f/4, I felt the price was slightly high, and basically I would be paying extra for the macro adapter and right angle viewfinder which I'm not sure how often I would use. I prefer faster lenses, although I know I could live with f/4 on a 90mm. Also I know I can get it for around 400 Euros less in the UK, so I decided not to purchase either lens at this point.  And then I saw an Elmar-C 90mm f/4 in his cupboard.  A tiny lens, weighing only ±270 grams, 40 years old, but delivering results of a quality that, whilst not quite as good as the Macro-Elmar, are not too far off, for about 8% of the cost of either the Macro-Elmar or the APO. Also size wise ideal as a travel lens for when I want a short telephoto. A few test shots confirmed that the lens sample worked well with my rangefinder, so I decided to try it and hold out a bit longer for either the APO or the Macro-Elmar when I can find one at both the right price and delivering high quality results that I should be able to get when spending that much money.  I've attached a few examples, all shot at f/4, that I took whilst wandering around this afternoon with my new purchase. Interested to see whether you think this is a worthwhile investment (although at the price, I can't see how it is not:))..... Welcome, dear visitor!
