Price increase on 50 Apo coming soon. Seriously?

Leica have some nerve increasing the price of a lens that they have been unable to deliver to people who have been waiting for it for months or even years by $900. This is appalling and they should honor the current price on all orders placed before the increase.

Extension of this thread.

I think current price will be honored for orders before July 1; this has happened many times, including the even more expensive S lenses, which took forever. Even this same lens already had a price increase May 1 of last year.

I'm hardly surprised given all the extra work, and cost, that has gone into making this lens right.

Welcome to Leica world.

Do you have any hard information they will not?

Like the 21 & 24 Summiluxes, the upcoming 28 Summilux and the 50 Noctilux, it is a specialty lens and the price is high and on the rise. There is no doubt in my mind that the 50 Apo Summicron is a fantastic lens and if I had an unlimited budget, I might have it and all of the lenses liter above. As is, I am grateful for what I do have.

Are you speculating which is so? There are several 50mm options available of course from the Summarit through to the Noctilux for a range of prices. You can't hold Leica Camera responsible if you find that desire and technolust mean that you really want (more than need?) a lens despite the cost ;-)

I can comment at least that an order placed with deposit by a friend of mine here (Australia) prior to the last price increase across the range here is to be delivered at that earlier price.

Regarding supply and availability, I had the opportunity to speak with the Director of Operations in Wetzlar about this lens when he acting as one of the tour guides for visitors as part of the centennial celebrations events.

He was a very pleasant and helpful gentleman incidentally. Surprising how often the guides allocated at each station introduced themselves by starting to say, I have been with Leica Camera for 30 years......

I was told that the production processes for this lens are all resolved and it is in serial production. However I was reminded that it is an extremely demanding design to manufacture and production volume will always be limited.

Has anyone found out what changes were made to the lens in production and is a returned/reworked lens entirely equivalent to current production?

I suppose it is not surprising the lens has gone up in price so much - though still less than the Noctilux but I do feel the law of diminishing returns at work here.

How much of this 900$ is due to increased manufacturing costs and how much goes to extra profit? Has Leica ever discovered an upper limit to what we will pay for a lens?

Leica pricing has always been based on what the market will bear.

I'll pay the extra 900$ or twice more if they can delivery it in 30 days. ;)

Its very scare to think of the portion of a person's total lifetime has been wasted on waiting such lens - its been more than a year, and a scary 2% if I'm lucky to live another 50 years.

Maybe because I'm still relatively young compare to most population in this forum, and 1 year is heck of a lot of life opportunity.
