28 cron and 24 elmar

Any thoughts on the relative virtues of these two lenses?

 

I mostly use 35, but would like something in the 24-28 range. I've enjoyed the GRD (28 equivalent) and previously used the ZM 25 on an M9, and found the focal length quite useful.

 

From files online and the MTF charts, both of these lenses appear to be excellent.

 

Has anyone used these focal lengths side-by-side? Do those 4 mm in focal length really make any practical difference?

If you are using a 35, I think the 28 is too close. On the other hand if you bought a 28 Cron, you may never use the 35 again, especially if you have a 50 as well.

I use a 35mm when I want to bring only one lens with me, and generally pair a 24 and 50 when I want more options. The 24 Elmar is outstanding by the way, but so is the 28 Elmarit at a lower price, smaller size and lighter weight. Either 24 or 28 pair very well with a 50mm, but 24 also pairs well with a 35.

I am about to give back my elmarit 28mm and buy a 24mm elmar to use it with 50mm.I am doing this becouse i didn't really like the image quality of elmarit.It is small contrast lens but nothing like 75mm apo and 90mm apo or 50mm apo.I have read i lot thet 24 lmm elmar is the wide angle of these best big guys.You think is it not better than elmarit 28mm?

I wish someone could post few photos taken from the same spot with 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm.

I plan on adding 24mm to my 35mm lens, and would really like to see how it would pair it. I guess much better than 28mm.

 

Unfortunately, I don't have any other camera to do the test by myself.

Google is your friend….just search '24mm vs 28mm vs 35mm' and the top results will have lots of examples.

 

Of course there are other issues…size, weight, VF blockage, frame line visibility, 'distortion' potential, etc. And moving your feet helps in many cases.

I already have. Here is an example of what I made out of the Tamron's tool from their site.

However, I believe if the photo was taken with a 21mm the buildings on the sides would appear a bit longer. In short, I believe the frames are ok, but the perspective would be different, hence, the request.

Linear perspective remains identical when shooting the same subject from the same camera position, regardless of lens.

 

Distortion when moving closer or farther away is another matter depending on the actual scene.

 

Field of view is of course obvious.

I think the 24 Elmar is probably better than the 28 Elmarit. Even Leica admits that it is among their sharpest lenses, and everything I've shot with it bears that out. Razor sharp from corner to corner, even wide-open.
