Dikaiosune01 Posted June 6, 2014 Share #1  Posted June 6, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been reading through the forums about back focusing, and I wanted a bit of help understanding it. I recently bought a 50mm summilux; and thought it would be a good time to put into practice what others have talked about with backfocusing. My questions are as follows... (1) Testing, can backfocusing be checked with live view? (2) Is my copy back focusing? (3) Is the error neglible? Or this is this a common error that is typically associated with poor eyesight? Will I ever see a difference in real photos (especially in the micro contrast)? Do I need to send this one back to leica for adjustment?  With both samples, the focus point is on the vertical of the "T" of Tsim. The first one was taken with the rangefinder by carefully focusing and bracing. The second was taken with the live view with the red highlight thing and the same meticulous care to focus and bracing.  Thank you  (Focusing with rangefinder)  (Focusing with live view)
Advertisement Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Hi Dikaiosune01, Take a look here I don't fully understand "Back Focusing" (50mm Summilux). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
JWW Posted June 6, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted June 6, 2014 Did you mean the focus was on the T of Tsui, not Tsim? Looks like the focus is correct if you focused on the T of Tsui.
Jean-Michel Posted June 6, 2014 Share #3  Posted June 6, 2014 Hi, Your images: hand-held,wide open. Both appear to show the plane of focus where you wanted it. I'd say that you have no problem at all with your lens. Tere are a number of devices -- LenAlign is one, that you can purchase, or make to test your focusing, Here is an example of a lens back-focusing; it is my 335 Summicron (version 1 with goggles). you can see that it back-focuses.I focused on the target but the actual focus was slightly further away. To get 'right-on' focus I simply adjust my focusing by a smidge -- works. I wish that I could get this lens adjusted but unfortunately that is not possible. The target is a home made device designed from Squit Photo  Jean-Michel Welcome, dear visitor! pico Posted June 6, 2014 Share #4 Â Posted June 6, 2014 The live-view image is perfect, but the rangefinder one is more than acceptable. You are fine! .
Bill W Posted June 6, 2014 Share #5 Â Posted June 6, 2014 I would say that if you are focusing on Tsim then you are getting some back focusing here.
Dikaiosune01 Posted June 7, 2014 Author Share #6 Â Posted June 7, 2014 My meant to say "Tsui." I was focusing on the T of places of Tsui.
