JackStantler Posted June 5, 2014 Share #1 Â Posted June 5, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey! Â So im looking for a 28mm lens for a Leica M8. Unfortunately the Leica lenses are out of my budget at the moment, so i was looking for some alternatives and ive found these: Â Voigtlander Ulton 28mm f/2.0 Minolta Rokkor 28mm f/2.8 Konica M-Hexanon 28mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss Biogon 28mm f/2.8 Â If I've overlooked one, pls let me know. Â So which one should i pick up, is there a clear winner here ? I did some research online but couldn't really find the answer. The Rokkor seems to have some white spot problems, but is the cheapest. The Zeiss is the most expensive one but could not find if it was worth the extra compared to the Hexanon or voigtlander. Â I hope some of you could help me decide on what lens i should go for. Thx! stephen.w Posted June 6, 2014 Share #3 Â Posted June 6, 2014 I speak under correction, but I read somewhere that the Minolta lens does not bring up 28mm framelines on cameras other than the CLE. I would also go for the Zeiss.
t-goelzer Posted June 6, 2014 Share #4  Posted June 6, 2014 Love my Ultron 28 /2…  extremely sharp and (of course) ultra low price
Dougg Posted June 7, 2014 Share #5 Â Posted June 7, 2014 I speak under correction, but I read somewhere that the Minolta lens does not bring up 28mm framelines on cameras other than the CLE. I would also go for the Zeiss. True ... 28mm is the default frameline on the CLE that appears even with no lens mounted. Same as 35mm is on an M body. So the Minolta 28mm will show the 35mm framelines on an M8... and any M 35mm will show 28mm framelines on the CLE. Also, a regular M 28mm will bring up the 90mm framelines on the CLE, but the default 28 frameline is still always visible.

jaapv Posted June 7, 2014 Share #7 Â Posted June 7, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) An Elmarit 28 (for instance Version 3) should be in the same price range as these offerings.
cpclee Posted June 7, 2014 Share #8 Â Posted June 7, 2014 My m hexanon 28/2.8 beats my 28/2.8 Elmarit ASPH significantly in the corners but loses out slightly in the center. It is also slightly lower in contrast and warmer in color rendition than the ASPH. Though I still consider it to have a modern look. Â I'm only keeping the ASPH but that's just because the small size. Image quality wise I would be just happy as either. Â The 28mm GR lens for the screw mount is also quite outstanding based on what I've seen.
cpclee Posted June 7, 2014 Share #9 Â Posted June 7, 2014 BTW I tested two different copies of the ASPH but the conclusion was the same
epand56 Posted June 7, 2014 Share #10  Posted June 7, 2014 I think you should really consider the Voigtlander Ultron 28/1.9 Aspherical. It is a wonderful lens, very sharp and well built, far better than the 28/2. I mostly used that on my M8 Some samples:  https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfp1/t31.0-8/201469_214939538532276_7254822_o.jpg  https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/t31.0-8/219146_214939578532272_5921274_o.jpg  https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xaf1/t31.0-8/221006_214939558532274_8377220_o.jpg  https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfa1/t31.0-8/219468_214939618532268_7922015_o.jpg
stevesurf Posted June 7, 2014 Share #11  Posted June 7, 2014 I know it's not the 28, but the 25 f/2.8 ZM on the M8 is wonderful. A little wider, though not so wide as to approximate the field of view without an external VF. Sharpness, build quality; I really love it on the M8. When used on the M9 it has very slight vignetting that disappears at f/5.6.  Biogon T* 2,8/25 ZM | ZEISS United States  The Zeiss ZM 25 Biogon 2.8 Lens Review | STEVE HUFF PHOTOS PROS Its pretty tiny and light. Built nicely, and the aperture ring is smooth but solid. Feels nice. The color is warm, rich and in good lighting can be magical. I do not think a lens can be ANY sharper. Gives a nice wide view on the M9 Cost! At $1000 or so, this is a great price for a wide angle M lens. CONS  Vignetting is apparent on the M9, even some at F4 but its SLIGHT and hardly noticeable in real shots. On the M9, you have to remember to set the lens up in the menu. I recommend setting as a Leica 28 Elmarit. Lens shade is an extra cost for this and all Zeiss ZM lenses. (I was not sent a lens hood) Does not come with a case. If you want accurate framing you will need the Zeiss viewfinder as the M9′s VF will not show you a 25mm frame.  Good luck with it!
GLAUMAX Posted June 11, 2014 Share #12 Â Posted June 11, 2014 I think you should really consider the Voigtlander Ultron 28/1.9 Aspherical. It is a wonderful lens, very sharp and well built, far better than the 28/2. Â Â Â Another vote for the Ultron 28mm 1.9 I have had some 28mm before (Elmarit Asph, Biogon 28, Summicron 28) and this is the one I kept. The best bang for the bucks of all. Â Furthermore it is really easy to code it with a LTM/M ring with 6bit included.
gyoung Posted June 11, 2014 Share #13 Â Posted June 11, 2014 And one more, I have been very happy with my 28/1.9 Ultron both on film and on the nex 6 Â Gerry
farnz Posted June 11, 2014 Share #14  Posted June 11, 2014 … If I've overlooked one, pls let me know. ... Another supporter of the Voigtlander 28/1.9.  You might also consider:  - Kobalux (aka Avenon) 28/3.5 - Leitz 28/6.3 Hektor.  Pete.
friedeye Posted June 13, 2014 Share #15 Â Posted June 13, 2014 I shoot with the Zeiss 28 2.8 on my M9 and find it to be an amazing lens. Very sharp and distortion free. Â But there's no arguing with the Voigtlander 1.9 -- it's a well built, fast lens that can be had for 1/2 the price. Like many Voigtlanders, it's terrific bang for the buck.
