So I'm slightly new to leica. I have an M6 TTL. My current lens is a minolta rokkor 40mm f2.

So the lenses I'm considering are the leica 28mm summicron or the 50mm summilux. I can't afford both at the.moment so the decision is crucial. Both have obvious advantages and disadvantages. I've don't street photography with a 24mm on a nikon. It's great but sometimes you have to get real close. I do enjoy the look of wide angle lenses shot up close allot. But it's a bit nerv wrecking in practice. My concern about the 50 summilux is the size and weight. How bad is it to carry around all day?

Also does the 28mm focus faster being that's it's wider? Or is the focus throw about the same on the two?

Should I just grow some balls and get closer with a 28mm? The extra stop of light on the 50mm is tempting though. How is the image quality between the two? Is the 50mm god like? I'm no stranger to pro glass. Just new the leica, and I want it's reputation to stand up to my expectations.

Thanks,

Jon

Both lenses are very light compared to Nikon equivalents. The 50 is only 50g heavier than the 28. Personally I would prefer the 28 over the 50 as a first/only lens - you can always take a step forwards, but not always a step back :) it's a great street lens, but make sure the viewfinder on your M6 has framelines for 28mm as there are different magnification viewfinders available.

Bother the lux 50 and the cron 28 are excellent top quality lenses - you won't be disappointed with either.

You have a very good point about not being able to take a step back. And yes my m6 does have the 28mm fame line. Thanks

Edit: dont really want a 2.8. I shoot low light some times and even f2 is not fast enough but I can manage.

Edit edit: if I pick the 50mm I'm going to sell my 40mm.

I've used a 50 Summicron on M4 & M6 since 1968, and much prefer its size, simplicity, and handling to the Summilux. I find f2 fully adequate for available light on film after so many years of 1/15 shooting.

The 50mm Summilux is about the price of both the 28mm Elmarit and the 50mm Summicron combined.
