Is this a new Leica 35 Summicron-M ?

...but with the front rim (the part before the aperture ring) photoshopped, to give it a wider diameter.

This gives rise to the assumption that the other unfamiliar decoration rings seen in said picture also are not custom-made but photoshopped (on the Tri-Elmar-M 16-18-21 mm Asph, the Summilux-M 24 mm Asph, the Elmar-M 24 mm Asph, and the Super-Elmar-M 18 mm Asph)...

Olaf, I simply cannot believe Leica will PHOTOSHOP representations of their lenses. There is just no valid reason to do so. Rather, I suspect that Leica is on their way to conform the outer appearance of their lens line to be in line with each other.

Does the new 28mm Summilux have a removable ring on the front also?

Likely as it has the same new style thread on aluminium hood with end stop.

Some of these new style lenses though do not come out of the box with such a cosmetic ring (my 21 SE did not include such a ring in the package while I have seen that this ring is separately available for the lens).

I am with Andy here - it simply would be unreasonable for a manufacturer with the pedigree of Leica to use photoshopped (read: misleading and misrepresentative) product photos on one of their official websites for advertisement.

This is not something you do as a corporation.

This alone to me is proof enough in this case that the mystery lens actually exists - if even as a one off prototype which might be long gone already as we write this (destroyed, used in another mockup, …) … or (as I want to believe) is showing a direction of a new 35 Summicron to be introduced in the near future.

Such mystery lenses in product shots in catalogues and advertising have been happening countless times before - every major camera manufacturer has had them.

Some of these have never been brought to market while many never seen before examples have been introduced to the market thereafter.

As a side note: the actual file name of the discussed photo is:

Please pay attention to "teaser" in the file name ;)

Leica did use photoshopped product photos in the past and still do it in some of their technical leaflets for instance (pic) but not for misrepresentation needless to say.

How likely is it that a rumoured new 35 Cron would have exactly the same lens distance markings as the previous version? All previous editions have changed...

Not unlikely in this case:

- same focal length

- same focus range (0.7m - ∞)

- not unlikely to keep the same focus tab design used since the 28/2, 35/2 ASPH, 50/1.4 ASPH
