Last but not least, I suggest you to avoid the new release of this lens, the Ultron 28/2, that is not at all as good as this one.

Well, I'd like to say a word for the Ultron 28/2: whilst it's perhaps not as sharp as the 28/1.9 in the corners and suffers from focus shift (to varying degrees, depending on the individual copies of the lens), it is more flare-resistant and shows a very pleasant tonal range with a somewhat muted (hard to describe) colour palette. I find its bokeh to be very attractive as well in most lighting circumstances.

It's one of the most unloved CV lenses (possibly due to large sample variations in its early production days), but I often choose it over the Summicron or the Elmarit when I don't want/need absolute sharpness and would rather have a subtle colour rendering.

I did, however, have to test a few copies before finding one I was happy with.

Daedra,

Another inexpensive option offering excellent value in terms of optical performance and build quality are the Konica Hexanon rangefinder lenses. The 35mm f/2 UC-Hexanon lens in particular has many fans on this and other forums and the 28mm f/2.8 M-Hexanon and 50mm f/2 M-Hexanon are excellent performers as well. There are others such as the (renowned) 60mm f/1.2, 50mm f/1.2, and dual focal length 21/35mm f/3.5 but they will be well beyond the budget you have set.

Pete.

Thanks so much guys!

I'm overwhelmed with the suggestions and it's great!

I love having guidance on what I choose as a Lens is arguably the most important thing.

I'm looking into all of you suggestions and I'll get back when I make my choice

Thank you!

When I first got my first leica (a m8) I got the 28mm ultron voightlander to go with it.

Later I replaced it with the 28 elmarit-m asph. But they both are nice lenses.

The 28 Summicron will be perfect as a first lens. Should you decide to move to a M full frame later, this lens will also come in very useful.

Use this for a while before considering another lens.

I agree, an excellent lens, but you won't find a 28mm cron for under $750 - they go for at least three times that

+1. Hence my advice to go for the much cheaper (and still superb) 28 Elmarit Asph in post No2 above....
