Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted May 23, 2014 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Guys Long story but I will keep it short. I am in the market to buy a Nikon D800e to accompany my Nikon D4s as I want it for shooting Landscape and printing big and also for shooting perched birds where I can crop the hell out of it and still have a nice picture. Anyways a buddy of mine that has just about everything Leica has ever made recommended I get a Sony aR7 and use my Leica lenses on that (he does the same). So I posted on another forum in the UK as I had some niggling questions that I wanted help with and a few of the guys were saying that the wide angle Leica Lenses don’t work very well with the Sony so I am asking if anyone on here has had any experience with using Leica wide angle lenses on the Sony aR7 (If I get it I will want to use my Leica 21mm Lux). As always any help would be much appreciated
Advertisement Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Hi Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS, Take a look here Using Leica wide angle lenses on a Sony ar7. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
IkarusJohn Posted May 23, 2014 Share #2 Posted May 23, 2014 I had no difficulty with my 21 Lux on the A7r. I had lots of other issues, though (shutter slap is a problem).
Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted May 23, 2014 Share #3 Posted May 23, 2014 I had lots of other issues, though (shutter slap is a problem). Really.........sorry but what is that and was it only with the 21mm Lux I also have a 50mm Noctilux
thighslapper Posted May 23, 2014 Share #4 Posted May 23, 2014 Look in the digital forum under sony a7 ...... You have 4500 posts of moderately tetchy info. Suffice to say, some sub 50 lenses work fine, but the majority have some issues ..... the main one for me being very poor edge (and I mean the 25%.at the sides, not just the very edges) performance ..... several users post comprehensive reports ....... Also bear in mind that you need to use 1/2f shutter speeds at least to avoid blurring .... Presumably because of the great clattering shutter it has ...... (Ie. shutter slap) ...... And although it might not be important using leica lenses ...... I found AF on the sony lenses a bit flakey .....
Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted May 23, 2014 Share #5 Posted May 23, 2014 Look in the digital forum under sony a7 ...... You have 4500 posts of moderately tetchy info. ..... PLEASE Dont do that to me............... 45000 posts will take me 3 years to read and if I am going to buy the aR7 then I will be buying it in 2 weeks time. Just need to know/see pictures of shots taken with the 21mm lux and 50mm Noctilux and comments on what people have experianced with these lenses............thanks Prity PLEASE
FlashGordonPhotography Posted May 23, 2014 Share #6 Posted May 23, 2014 50's aren't generally a problem with colour casts (italian flag) but some do have some corner smearing. It's usually pretty mild though. The problem is that Sony make a stunning native 55 f1.8 (that's compared to the Otus) and no adapted rangefinder lens can keep up with it in the corners. 21's are a bigger problem. The 21 lux will have a colour shift and smear in the corners. The 21 CV I have seems to have better corner performance but still needs colour correction via Cornerfix or Flatfield. The best WA for the Sony A7r, by some margin, is the WATE. No colour issues and great corner sharpness when down a stop or two. Wide angle SLR lenses are far more successful on the A7r than wide rangefinder lenses. There are some stellar lenses available cheap if you're prepared to go that route. They'll also be smaller and lighter than SLR lenses (in some cases close to RF size). Gordon
Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted May 23, 2014 Share #7 Posted May 23, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I guess Sony don't have any WAL in there arsenal right now
CaptZoom Posted May 24, 2014 Share #8 Posted May 24, 2014 I feel like an a_____e pointing this out, but you can't use any M lens on the D800(E). On a somewhat related side note, Sony does have some wide angle lenses available for the Alpha line which can be adapted to the NEX mount like this Ziess 24mm f/2 lens, additionally a Ziess 16-35mm f/2.8. CaptZoom Posted May 24, 2014 Share #11 Posted May 24, 2014 Who said anything about Leica lens on a D800???? Just a bonus that comes along with the A7[emoji768]; a bonus missing from the D800(e).
jaapv Posted May 24, 2014 Share #12 Posted May 24, 2014 Shooting a perched bird with a 21 wide-angle and then cropping? You will need a 3400 MP sensor for that…
thighslapper Posted May 24, 2014 Share #13 Posted May 24, 2014 I think the answer is that the A7r is not going to do everything you want well ...... just some and the rest badly ...... I thought it would be a good compact hi-res M alternative with the ability to use M and R lenses with adapters but found all the problems and niggles just too much trouble. There is no point using superb Leica optics on a camera that gives average results with many of them. There is no real substitute for a DSLR with VR long lenses ........ and no compact lightweight version of that combo either...... Like me, you are searching for the holy grail ....... an interchangeable high quality full frame compact camera system that does everything ........ which currently doesn't exist........ I've dumped everything except my Leica gear ..... M for most things, X-Vario for lightweight travel and a selection of longer R lenses for the odd occasion when I need them...... There as some things I can't do as easily as with my old Nikon stuff ..... but at least I don't need a line of native bearers to cart the gear around after me ....... viramati Posted May 24, 2014 Share #14 Posted May 24, 2014 Don't know about the A7r of the 21 lux but the CV 21/1.8 performs very well on the A7. the WATE performs well though it is hard to focus accurately due to its maximum f4 aperture and the inherent DOF makes focus peaking and even magnification hard to judge

Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted June 12, 2014 Share #16 Posted June 12, 2014 Got the D800e last week but have been in a training class all week so not been able to try her out but plan to do so at the weekend. I managed to borrow my mates Sony a7r today for an hour and tried both my 21mm lux and 50 Noctilux. The ease in focusing just blew me away. The focus peaking is in your face red (I believe you can even change the colour) and from the few shots that I took with the 21mm lux there was no vinegaretting like others have stated. I plan to get one after school tomorrow along with the Sony 24/70 f4

algrove Posted June 12, 2014 Share #19 Posted June 12, 2014 Neil I tried the a7r and sent it back after 10 days mostly due to shutter vibration even with the R 15/2.8 lens. Forget it in my opinion. Just get Nikon lenses and keep or sell your Leica lenses if you will not use a Leica body. Sony might improve on the a7r in the future so be patient which I know is not your strong suit. Did you ever get a Monochrom? Incredible images possible with your Leica glass.

I tried it yesterday and fell in love with it. No need to sell my Leica Lenses as the only two that I have worked perfectly on the a7r...........well they did yesterday. As for the M body If I still love the Sony after a week I will be selling that and get a APO.........no I did not get the Monochrome I got a D4s instead:)
