A bit over a month ago I purchased a Summitar 50mm screw mount lens. When it arrived there were two paint flakes internally on one of the elements, obviously off the barrel. Unfortunately the man who normally does my Leica work says he hasn't got the equipment to get at the flakes because of the lens design and age. I am now looking for a technician who has the right equipment and won't drill a hole into the lens to get it apart.

When the lens arrived what excited me was the excellent condition of the glass which I had read was prone to haze and scratching, this one has absolutely no haze and microscopic cleaning marks at worst. It is in fantastic condition apart from the paint flakes being in the way.

I'm hoping someone here can recommend a technician to do the job, in Australia or overseas.

The shop I went to in the first place is Camera Exchange who use Vic Plant, both Melbourne based.

thanks

Try Peter Grisaffi at CRR Luton in England. He did a first-class job a few years ago with my Summar and Summitar. He didn't seem to like email, so I'd advise calling him or communicating by text messages.

In Europe, I'm quite sure Malcolm Taylor or Will van Manen would also be able to do it.

Depending on the size of the flakes, it's likely that they won't affect your photos in any way. It may be best to leave well enough alone.

Thanks James, the main flake is quite large and would interfere with the image I'm sure. It does seem to move around so one option might be to shake it out of sight and hope it stays there. I'd prefer to get rid of them all the same if it wasn't going to cost an arm and a leg. The lens didn't cost that much but it is in fantastic condition so I'm desperate to fix it or solve the problem somehow.
