bephoto Posted May 19, 2014 Share #41 Â Posted May 19, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) The 'problem' you mention (you name it 'distorting') with being at 0,7 m... the problem I mention is actual "Geometric Distortion" of a lens which as far as I know it has nothing to do with perspective and it is totally dependent on the optical design. This lens weirdly has 0.5 positive distortion only in the far corners the rest is totally flat.
Advertisement Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Hi bephoto, Take a look here 50 Lux is an absolute joy. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
erl Posted May 21, 2014 Share #42 Â Posted May 21, 2014 Somebody left the GAS on around my place. I just committed to a demo 50 Lux. To facilitate it I had to 'give' my 50Cron + M8 to my 16 year old grandson. That left a gap in my line up of lenses (not really - I still have the 50 Noct!). Â I hope to have fun, and use, initially comparing the 3 lenses. Really, I am only interested in different drawing of these lenses, but I do a lot of low stuff as well. The new lens should be here by the end of the month.
Carduelis Posted May 21, 2014 Share #43 Â Posted May 21, 2014 I am afraid I had a bout of GAS the other day and traded in my 50 Cron for an ASPH 50 Lux (6 bit coding) in mint condition at a Leica dealer. I went and tested it first outside in the sunshine for edge to edge sharpness/flare and was very impressed with the results. I even viewed the results on a large monitor in the camera shop. Â I feel a bit hypocritical, because I have always stated on this Forum that I preferred used Leica lenses that were small and light and now I have ended up with ASPH Lux 35 (pre-FLE) and 50 mm lenses. After a recent holiday to Indo-China, I was particularly impressed with the ASPH Lux 35 which delivered outstanding rendering, with excellent colours, sharpness and I guess the Leica 'pop' that is talked about. That experience also influenced my decision to buy the 50 mm equivalent.

FlashGordonPhotography Posted May 22, 2014 Share #45 Â Posted May 22, 2014 I too, have folded in the last week and picked up a 50 Lux ASPH. Found one at the old price and couldn't resist. The only real reason is the slight focus shift my Noktons have. Not a good reason but it's all I've got. So far so good. Â Also got my Novoflex macro tubes. Haven't really had a chance to play with either of them extensively. Will do over the week end though. Â Gordon

I always reserved my summicrons for holidays, but on a recent trip to Torridon, I was so impressed with the 35/1.4FLE I find myself considering taking the 35 and 50 summiluxes to Bhutan later this year. mca Posted May 22, 2014 Share #47 Â Posted May 22, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was wondering if the older versions of the 50mm Lux, specifically the type II, are also so good as the ASPH version. I don't mean to compare them but would an older Summilux be as good or better than a 50mm Summicron (not ASPH)?

Owning the 35 lux FLE, I know how an ASPH lense can perform. I don't miss the ASPH on the 50 lux. Â I woul suggest you to go and test one. The Lux's are beauties, all of them
pgk Posted May 23, 2014 Share #49 Â Posted May 23, 2014 I was wondering if the older versions of the 50mm Lux, specifically the type II, are also so good as the ASPH version. I don't mean to compare them but would an older Summilux be as good or better than a 50mm Summicron (not ASPH)? The difference (from my experience of owning both pre-aspheric and now the aspheric) is quite noticeable wide open where the corners are clearly better. As soon as the lenses are stopped down there is far less difference, and the older design actually shows a subtle smoothness of tonality which I suspect might even be missing in the aspheric. So it depends on whether you are going to shoot wide open a lot. Â Its a long time since I owned a 50 Summicron but I suspect that there is not a great deal in it between the lenses at f/2 - others will no doubt be better placed to comment on this. BUT the point about owning a 1.4 lens is that it can be used at 1.4 not, IMO, whether it is better than a slower lens.
mca Posted May 25, 2014 Share #50 Â Posted May 25, 2014 Thank you for your opinions. I love my Summicron 50mm (pre-ASPH) but I still didn't master the f/2 aperture, I tend to forget that depth of field goes very shallow when you get close to your subject meaning an out of focus image at the slightest movement of the camera or the subject (for example kids). For this I usually shoot portraits at f/2.8. Â Anyway I hope to get better with more practice and I might try a Summilux one day, maybe that older version because of cost and also because I am not sure how much I will enjoy the f/1.4 shallow DoF. MarkP Posted May 25, 2014 Share #51 Â Posted May 25, 2014 For this I usually shoot portraits at f/2.8. Â But this also then means that the whole face is in focus rather than just one cornea .

The Lux's are beauties, all of them   In practical shooting terms, having owned latest pre-asph and now asph, the biggest difference is the sliding hood. Asph has a clearly better designed hood. Outside that, I see no reason for anyone to "trade-up" from pre-asph to asph. Well, maybe pixel peepers and poster makers..  I never had any issues with image quality of the pre-asph. My version change only happened, because I changed systems briefly and now got back to Leica... no pre-asph was available, so I got the asph.  Fantastic lenses both.  //Juha
jamriman Posted May 26, 2014 Share #53 Â Posted May 26, 2014 This post cost me $2850 for one. Now I have a 50 pre asph also which I won't sell since it's a black pain version. Well at least I got a killer deal on it I just couldn't resist.

jay968 Posted May 26, 2014 Author Share #55 Â Posted May 26, 2014 Picked up a Fuji XE-1 the other day along with a Leica M lens adapter and now I have the equivalent of a 75mm F1.4 ASPH FLE on that camera. While not as breathtaking as the same lens on the M240, the results are actually very impressive. The XE-1 is on closeout and in the US can be had for about $500.
