DMJ Posted April 5, 2014 Share #1 Â Posted April 5, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Been looking at replacing the flanges on my ZM lenses & I note that the base plate of the ZM flange is slightly thicker than that of the Leica. Â I am aware that flange (lens) to sensor distance is important for total frame picture quality, but just wondered if anyone had experience of using a thinner base plate flange on the ZM's, therefore slightly reducing the lens-sensor distance? I am coming up with a scheme to 6-bit code them. If it is important then I will need a shim as well. Â Any experience anyone ?

tobey bilek Posted April 5, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted April 5, 2014 I replaced some Leica flanges with Jinfinance Chinese ebay ones for my wide lenses. Â They were .001" thicker and focus was off. I cut them down to the measured original flange thickness and all is well. You will need a micrometer to measure. Â I have no Zeiss lenses, but if they are off visually, then there is no chance the lens will focus correctly and I have no idea how a homemade shim could be made to the tolerance required. Further the mounting holes may or may not be placed correctly. Â Zeiss M lenses will bring up the correct frame lines and focus correctly. Current models have a recess cut in the flange so you can code with a pen and it will not rub off. Location fixture and pens can be purchased from Pop Flash Photo. $68 last week. jaapv Posted April 6, 2014 Share #3 Â Posted April 6, 2014 Why should you do so? Zeiss will supply flanges at quite reasonable prices. The newer type is easily codeable.
