Original packing

The old plastic bags with lens serial number sticker on them were pure quality. Heavy gauge plastic, with just enough flexibility.

But these new bags.....what is the world coming to?

I think we need a Forum subsection dedicated to Leica lens plastic bags.

Of course most of them have a serial number so their production date can be determined and thus help maintain their value.

Could be a good eBay business.

Each bag must therefore have its own serial number, over and above the serial number of the lens it contains, and the production date, possibly also the use by date.

You never stop learning, I never even realised the serial number was on the plastic bags, I've always stuffed them back in the box (along with the pouch) within seconds of getting a new lens. The good thing is this thread has covered the subject in detail and would be a good link for any prospective purchasers of Leica lenses so I say make it a 'sticky'.

But for the time being, and my own peace of mind, I'm wondering if I should go and have a look in the boxes, just to be sure I don't need replacement bags or if any need to be sent for a CLA?

For the sake of regularity, shouldn't front and back caps and the pouch be engraved with the lens' serial number? :D

They should be engraved with an original and unique epigraph of wisdom, wit and insight coined by the lens-assembler, and not allowed to leave the factory until the wisdom has been approved and signed off by the QC team.

It won't do the slightest harm to the speed of supply or prices, obviously.

I genuinely wish pouches had lens information on them, I am forever wondering why they don't fit, only to realise I picked up the wrong one for a weekend trip. !

You mean you actually use them to transport lenses?......;) But you are right. What fun it is playing 'match the case'. How the hours fly by. And if left alone together, empty, they breed.

I have never been able to ignore the subtle, varying degrees of leather grain and texture on the different cases. There must be a chapter in a collector's book there for someone...............

Please do not tell us that you stopped understanding the wisdom in serial numbers after the 42th one.

 Someone actually uses their leather Leica lens pouch .

I have never used the leather lens pouches as I think they are too bulky and cumbersome. They are all packed in the lens boxes with it's plastic bags and put away for if I ever come to sell the lens.

There is that little grey circular patch on the bottom of the pouch which I thought was to write on if you needed to ID the pouch/lens. However, that would of course significantly compromise the selling price on eBay.

My understanding was that the pouch was just like an expensive version of the plastic bag, but unlike the plastic bag it doesn't have a serial number.
