Torgian Posted March 13, 2014 Share #1 Â Posted March 13, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey all. Â So I'm moving to Japan in a little over a week, and have been putting off buying a 50mm lens till after I move there. Â However, I've decided to do a bit of shopping around. I can either get a used 50mm in the states for around 3300, or a new one for around 3900. Â Unfortunately I cannot find out how much a used 50mm 1.4 asph will cost me in Japan. I'm probably not entering the right search terms, but I can't find out at the moment. Â Does anyone have an idea?
Advertisement Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Hi Torgian, Take a look here 50mm 1.4 asph summicron in Japan? Prices?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jeff S Posted March 13, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted March 13, 2014 Well, your search might go better if you called it a Summilux and not a Summicron (which would be f2). Â My quick search turned up this, which lists the lens at 427,000 Yen, or about $4156 US, although I'm not clear if it's new or used. Â Jeff
Torgian Posted March 13, 2014 Author Share #3 Â Posted March 13, 2014 New. Â So a bit more than here in the States. Hmm. Might have to see about getting one before I leave.
DigitalHeMan Posted March 13, 2014 Share #4 Â Posted March 13, 2014 I was looking for one when I was there over Christmas. I saw a nice quality new condition Summilux at GMT for around $3600, and the cheapest new one (after taking off the 5% sales tax) was around 3950, so pretty much the same as the prices you have seen in the US. However there was very little choice in the second hand market for that particular lens, which is probably what is keeping the second hand price high. It also quotes the list price/ MSRP as being 451000 yen   Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Torgian Posted March 13, 2014 Author Share #6 Â Posted March 13, 2014 Unfortunately, one can never get the exact exchange rate. The closest I'd be able to get is a one-to-one exchange rate through an ATM, so it would still cost more over there than here, possibly. Â I wish there was a way I could try one. I'm just worried about the focus throw, people keep saying it's harder, but I just don't know how that is unless I try it out.

I'm not sure what's harder about the focus throw, I find it just as easy as my other lenses. It's (one of) the best 50mm lenses out there. If you can afford the price, buy one. You won't be disappointed.   Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Jeff S Posted March 13, 2014 Share #8 Â Posted March 13, 2014 The only focusing issue I'm aware of with the 50 Summilux ASPH is a tight, 'sticky' focus action in some samples. I wrote about it here, and that issue was easily fixed for me (finally) by DAG. Don't know who could address that circumstance in Japan if the need arose, so best to check the lens in advance (and buy from a reputable dealer with warranty). Â I've never had a problem with the focus throw. Â Jeff
Torgian Posted March 13, 2014 Author Share #9 Â Posted March 13, 2014 Thanks for the comments. Â There's a Leica dealer in Japan, and I believe a repair center is there as well actually. Â I will buy one here. Just seems like a cheaper solution, even brand new.
Jeff S Posted March 13, 2014 Share #10  Posted March 13, 2014 ...and I believe a repair center is there as well actually.  No doubt, but DAG is not your usual repair guy….as my link states, even Leica service failed to accomplish what he did.  Jeff
Stefan Herzberg Posted March 13, 2014 Share #11 Â Posted March 13, 2014 You should consider visiting Mapcamera in Shinjuku (Tokyo). They have a large selection of lenses and used lenses are in general in very good conditions. I bought several lenses there. (http://www.mapcamera.com) Prices always depend on the exchange rates and where you are coming from. The depreciation of the Yen over the last year made it interesting for me, coming from Europe. Good luck Stefan shashinski.com

darylgo Posted March 14, 2014 Share #13 Â Posted March 14, 2014 Consider that a new Leica USA purchase includes the 3 year passport warranty, plenty of time to iron out any issues with the lens and additionally if it is dropped or damaged.
