50mm f2.8 Elmar on an M9?

Will the collapsible Elmar-M lens fit on the M9 in the collapsed position? In my research of Leica lenses in my copy of the 7th edition Leica Pocket Book, it looks like the 50mm f 2.8 Elmar-M has pretty decent performance and contrast and the collapsible feature makes it a tempting lens to have. But when the lens is collapsed, the barrel protrudes into the body cavity. Will it fit the M-9 body with the lens collapsed?

It is a lovely lens, especially the silver version made of heavy brass. But if the lens shade is mounted there is hardly a size difference compared to a new style Summicron 50 with retractable lens shade.

The obvious comparison for the Elmar is the 1:2,5/50 Summarit-M, which is even smaller than the Elmar uncollapsed. You can collapse the Elmar if you do it carefully and only after fixing the lens in the bayonet. Though it's collapsing function isn't really important. It's all about the simple optical design: not extremely sharp, but as contrasty as you can wish, concentrating on the center of the image with a pleasant decrease towards the corners, neutral rendering of colours, no distortion, excellent on short distances.

I still wish that Leica would present a new version of the Elmar to commemorate 100 years of Leica cameras, though I am rather sure they won't.

One of my favourite 50's a great lens, very quick to focus and very sharp, I have the pre asph late summilux, the f1 Noctilux and the current late Mandler summicron and have no intention of selling the little Elmarit-M

It has a slightly different look in the way it renders to all of the other 50's I have and I like it very much, a frequent choice in the summer for me.

If your copy shows any play with the base Malcolm Taylor can deal with this during the service as he uses slightly thicker grease than Leica and mine came back with Zero wobble and a very quick and slick focus.

A great lens, collapses without problems as everybody else has said. If you have mechanical sympathy and average hand to eye co-ordination you can mount it collapsed on the M9, and even if you foolishly tried there is no way to make the rear lens barrel touch the shutter even by levering it into the camera at the most extreme angle. Warnings about mounting it in the extended position are to do with not scratching the paint inside the camera or bending the focus cam arm.

In what way?

Difficult to describe but a slightly more textured look to the bokeh, the Cron I love and somehow seems more sophisticated and polished with its rendering, the pre asph Summilux has fabulous bokeh with real life and movement, not the swirl of the Noctilux but the bold circular out of focus background classic to older glass. Somehow the Elmar-M is grittier, I am probably talking B*****cks but it's easy to see when you live with it

Here's an example of harsh light and straight out of the M9 jpg, I have done nothing with it, as it left the camera, the buxus OOF rendering is classic Elmar-M and the resolution is shockingly good, particularly f4-f8, this one at f5.6. The shot is probably 1/4 stop under exposed and was a simple grab shot so not posted for any other reason than the fact that it was the fist one I found that showed resolution and the characteristic bokeh

I measured the distance and found it safe to collapse on my M9

I'm using the Elmar-M 50/2.8 (last version) on my M9 since many years and can fully recommend it

+1

If you want to be safe, you can mount it in the same position as it is when you take the rear lens cap from it, this is not completely inserted.

In what way?

Hard to put a finger on it but somewhat closer to a slow film I'd say. Of course the camera sensor plays a role in this too.

I somehow talk better with pictures than words. Here are a few samples, shot with my M9:

Lovely bokeh. Better even than the CV 35mm f1.2 Nokton which I also have and will never part with. All in all, I now believe that I would be satisfied with the Elmar-M.

remember to always mount the lens fully extended and then collapse it. If you mount it collapsed, the diagonal extension might ht the cover glass.

... H

I second that. I did put on the barrel a narrow rubber band, just in case:)

Otherwise, Elmar-M is a fine little lens. BTW, when fully extended WITHOUT shade, Elmar seems being not that longer then the latest Summarit 50 w\o shade - I have owned both, but eventually sold the Summarit.

The only thing I hate with Elmar-M is the play of the tube when not locked...though it seems not affectting the pictures taken with the lens .
