Michael Hiles Posted March 3, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 3, 2014 Poor horse, poor you. Nice picture.
fotografr Posted March 3, 2014 Share #3 Posted March 3, 2014 He doesn't seem to be enjoying that very much. But there's always the barn. This makes me feel somewhat less sorry for myself with our lousy weather.
Northwest Wanderer Posted March 3, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted March 3, 2014 Michael & Brent, Last week I saw robins but this week it will be snow and rain. Funny thing with horses, the barn is left open so they can get out of the weather. Seems they just stay outside for the most part. What's the old saying, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink."
stuny Posted March 3, 2014 Share #5 Posted March 3, 2014 Very nice.
pauledell Posted March 3, 2014 Share #6 Posted March 3, 2014 Bill, A fine shot. At least you didn't have to shovel a path for your horse like we had to do to get our dogs out in the yard. Our Scottie and Beagle have such short legs, they needed a road to travel on. Paul
Northwest Wanderer Posted March 3, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted March 3, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Stuart & Paul, thank you. Paul, you're a good man to clear a path for your dogs. Used my snowblower this morning to clear my driveway. As soon as I finished, it started snowing again. March sure is coming in like a lion.
janlu Posted March 3, 2014 Share #8 Posted March 3, 2014 So much effort in this ..... from both parts !! Very good . Gianluca
Northwest Wanderer Posted March 3, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted March 3, 2014 Gianluca, This horse will receive extra hay & grain during these deep snows.
allamande Posted March 3, 2014 Share #10 Posted March 3, 2014 He seems like he is taking it one step at a time without a hint of discomfort. A stoic horse! There is a feeling of serenity (at least for me) that leads me to think this way. Extra hay is the least you can do Ece
platypus Posted March 3, 2014 Share #11 Posted March 3, 2014 Poor old fellow! But he looks to be in fine condition due to your care of him. A very long time ago I would to whinge to my father about the animals I thought were suffering outside during a harsh winter, while we were all snug in the house. He always said "they're beasts of the field kid, they are designed to take it". No comfort to me at the time, but I guess that's why your horses choose not to go into the barn. Northwest Wanderer Posted March 4, 2014 Author Share #12 Posted March 4, 2014 Ece & Dee, thank you. This horse is 23 years old this year and has wintered well. He knows to avoid the deeper snow drifts and measures his steps as he goes. I've had him since he was a colt and find him a joy to be around. The barn doors are open 24/7 should he wish to take shelter.
Iduna Posted March 4, 2014 Share #13 Posted March 4, 2014 Bill, a pitiul sight, seeing this nice horse struggling. But perhaps he needs this exercise. and its fur is so bushy.
Northwest Wanderer Posted March 4, 2014 Author Share #14 Posted March 4, 2014 Iduna, No need to pity this horse. He is walking in a measured manner. Smart horse and I think he will live for many more winters.

Northwest Wanderer Posted March 5, 2014 Author Share #18 Posted March 5, 2014 Lovely animal, well captured. It shows well the feeling of trudging through deep snow. Thank you. Showing the labor involved was the idea behind the image. It shows the hardship of winter.
Louis Posted March 5, 2014 Share #19 Posted March 5, 2014 Louis, I can understand your feelings but as a life long horseman I can assure you he is fine. If you wish I can post a new image taken today. Dear Bill, as I do not have any experience in this area; I fully trust your words!... Once in the middle of nowhere in Arizona, I saw an extremely skinny horse walking along the road, all by itself and nothing around! I wish I could do something, but what?... I felt so bad about that poor animal that I didn't even think to take a shot!
Northwest Wanderer Posted March 5, 2014 Author Share #20 Posted March 5, 2014 Louis, No problem with your comment. I can understand your reaction to the image. I share your feelings about animals that are not treated well. I've turned in other horse owners (I don't regard them as horseman) for not caring for their animals in a humane manner.
