Twilight Posted March 3, 2014 Share #1  Posted March 3, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi  I am thinking about a 28 mm lens.  The rendering of the summicron ASPH seems to have something extra over the elmarit ASPH, a certain look I like.  However I do not need F/2 that much, so I am wondering about a elmarit 28 preASPH (latest version before the current asph elmarit 28) mainly to reduce cost.  Can someone tell if the look of this preASPH elmarit is similar to the summicron APSH and what are the characteristics of this preASPH elmarit (sharpness, contrast, bokeh, flare...)  Thanks  Peter
Advertisement Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Hi Twilight, Take a look here rendering of summicron 28 asph & elmarit 28 preasph. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Dougg Posted March 5, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted March 5, 2014 One difference is that the Summicron is smaller than the pre-ASPH Elmarit, and a bit larger than the later ASPH Elmarit. I have the Summicron but have never used either Elmarit for comparisons. Happy shopping!
4X5B&W Posted March 5, 2014 Share #3  Posted March 5, 2014 The pre-ASPH Elmarit (ver 4) is actually exactly the same size as the Summicron. So no advantage either way.  People who have both lenses say that optically they are very similar, with the Cron being somewhat more contrasty, and the Elmarit probably a little sharper at the corners up to 5.6.  I have the Ver 4 Elmarit (have never shot with the Cron) and it is an extremely good lens, a very nice blend of the traditional Leica look, and SATA optical performance……highly recommended. Oops, you're right, I just checked. Same size. My recollection of the data is wrong, from 2003 when I was shopping for my Summicron. I think I was impressed that the faster lens was small... though not small-er.
4X5B&W Posted March 6, 2014 Share #5 Â Posted March 6, 2014 Yeh, the ver 3 is larger, but although the ver 4 design was more about decreasing the size, they also managed to improve the performance as well.
Twilight Posted March 15, 2014 Author Share #6 Â Posted March 15, 2014 My summilux 35 ASPH FLE is for sale (I decided to keep only the preASPH summilux) so I have the budget for a summicron ASPH. However the elmarit 3th and 4th version still attract me too. Â I would like to have more opinions of M9 users on the 3th and 4th version of the 28 elmarit, both in color and black&white. Rendering, resolution, contrast, viewfinder blockage (I do intend to use only the build in viewfinder and no external ones) Â Resolution up to the corners is certainly important to me since this lens will often be use stopped down for landscape, BUT overall rendering is of utmost importance to me. Â Too much contrast is not easily dealt with (reason I do not like some images taken with the 35 mm cron ASPH) so those preASPH elmarits are maybe better for my liking. Â Thanks!! Guest odeon Posted March 15, 2014 Share #7 Â Posted March 15, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) 28'rit's rendering is better for me. It's small, it has lower price tag. But, i bought a 28'cron. Because i need it. I need more light at low light conditions. Also i need a bit sharper lens.
