dant Posted February 9, 2014 Share #1 Â Posted February 9, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Why does the Zeiss 15mm for the Leica carry a big premium over the 15mm dslr mounts? Isn't it the exact same lens, just different mounts?
Advertisement Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Hi dant, Take a look here Premium on Zeiss 15mm?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mmradman Posted February 9, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted February 9, 2014 No it isn't. Â Zeiss M came first & it was designed to work with RF cameras - short registry distance 27.8mm. Â Zeiss ZF & ZE came much later, designed for SLR (Nikon & Canon) with longer registry distance to clear reflex mirror, in case of Nikon it is 46.5mm, slightly shorter on Canon. Â Reson SLR version is cheaper is perhaps to different economics of production, bigger batches for bigger SLR market.
wattsy Posted February 9, 2014 Share #3 Â Posted February 9, 2014 The ZM 15mm is made in Oberkochen. The SLR 15mm lenses are presumably made in the Cosina factory in Japan.
dant Posted February 9, 2014 Author Share #4 Â Posted February 9, 2014 Ah, I see. Yes big difference. Â Have any of you used the Zeiss 15 compared to the Voigtlander 15? Is there enough difference to justify the price?
stevesurf Posted February 10, 2014 Share #5 Â Posted February 10, 2014 Here is a Leica forum thread on the Zeiss 15, used on M9. Â Here is Ken Rockwell's very good review on the Voit 15 and potential incompatibly with M9. Â Hope this helps!
marknorton Posted February 10, 2014 Share #6  Posted February 10, 2014 It wouldn't be hard for the Zeiss to run rings around the Voigtländer. It vignettes badly on FF though of course the small size and low cost are its key selling points.  When I want to go wider than the 16mm Tri-Elmar, which is not often, I use either the Nikon 14mm f2.8 or the Nikon 14-24 f2.8 with a Nikon to M adapter. The zoom is better, being a newer design and it's hard to see why the 14mm f2.8 stays in production.

Yes big difference. Have any of you used the Zeiss 15 compared to the Voigtlander 15? Is there enough difference to justify the price?  I've owned both. I thought the Voigtländer was quite soft compared to the Zeiss which is razor sharp.  I use the Zeiss 15 a lot so it was worth the price differential to me but for occasional use, I wouldn't bother.
