Metal part scratched/peeled off, is this normal?

I'll post some tomorrow. I believe this hits the focusing mechanism, and it pealed the brass color to something black. Probably, I made these scratches when I was attaching the lens in a hurry. I also noticed if the lens was focused to 0.7 this part would have been inside the mount, and it probably wouldn't got scratched.

BTW I got this lens in November after it had broken aperture ring, so this must have had happened recently as it would have been observed by the repair engineer when it was in service.

Does a replacement of this part require a trip to Solms or it's an easy task to do?

First, if these are in fact gouges/scratches I sincerely doubt they were made by the rangefinder focus roller cam. Not only is this wheel extremely easy to move but, IT"S A WHEEL. Not likely to cause damage to a lens.

Next, you mention that the aperture ring was broken. How was it broken? Dropped? While the damage should have been noticed by a repair technician it could have gone unnoticed. Or it could have been noticed but as a replacement was not critical to restoring the lens to use it might have been signed off "as is".

Replacement of the brass focus helicoid not only requires a trip to Solms (or another qualified lens repair shop) and a complete disassembly, but is likely quite expensive.

Well, I didn't want to put the blame on Leica immediatelly. I really don't know how, and when it happened. The mounting process was the first idea how I could have done this. I checked the mount area again, and I don't see a way I did it. The lens itself doesn't have a single scratch, and it was surely not dropped. I mean, it could have been me, but I don't see a way I did this. I knew something was wrong with this lens when it came with a 35 Cron Manual. Than, the aperture ring simply stopped to work around f/2, f/2.8 as if there was something inside the lens.Grrrr!!!

Oh, this becomes my Leica nightmare. Two weeks ago I received a 21SEM that seems to have a de centralized element, and now this 75mm again.

What should I do now? Report it to the Leica or leave it as it is? The lens is under the US warranty. It is bought in March last year, but I started using it in June when the M arrived.

Errm, if the bit you are looking at is the bit I'm looking at are you sure there isn't another similar rebate/cutout in the brass helicoid 180 degrees opposite? It looks to me like the same feature appears on nearly all recent Leica lenses, nothing has fallen off.

OUCH!!! This definitely did not occur simply by mounting the lens. Either the helicoid was defective or damaged during manufacturer and the chip eventually broke off, or the lens received damage from a blow or drop of some sort.

I agree with Bill that I would return it to your dealer or send it to Leica. None of my lenses looks like this.

(I do not own the 75, but I cannot believe that it would ever be normal to have threads damaged in this way leave the factory)

There is a cutout 180 degrees opposite, but I cannot see it well. I does look dark though.

There is no way one could reveal the scratched areas at the same time, but one has to move focusing ring slightly to see it all.

As I wrote, the lens was never dropped, and in order to get theses scratches, a miracle would happen not to hit any of the silver mount part. The part in the green circle gets behind the silver mount once the scratched red circle marks get revealed, and the opposite. If you look at the lens from above the brass/helicoid ring looks pefect, not a single scratch. I am now 100% sure this is a manufacturer error. What I don't understand is passed QA in Solms, and than in NJ after the aperture ring failure.

I'll see what to do with the lens. If it would remain like this I'm fine with it, I'm just affraid it won't peel off any more.

Thanks for all the answers.

I would be worried about what that gouge is doing to the mating threads inside the lens!

The lens is very smooth, and there is no feel of tear or something rubs against something. It seems the part where the biggest scratch is, is the one where is a cutout anyway.

Those two small marks (in the green circle), just seem as the color fell off, the shape of the threads looks perfect though.
