50 on a budget?

I want to buy a new 50. And this time I want to do it on a budget.

I have had the Summilix ASPH, Summicron 50 and the Zeiss Sonnar 50. But not all at the same time, and not all with the same camera. I liked them all for different reasons and have found them quite different in the way the produce color.

So when it comes to "budget" lenses at 50m. I have narrowed it down to the Zeiss and the new Voigtlander. Has anybody used the new Voigtlander Nokton 1.5 Aspherical with M mount yet? I would love to see a comparison to the Zeiss 50 1.5 and the Summilux 50 1.4.

I kind of liked the Zeiss. But the obvious advantage with the Voigtlander is 0.7 meters min.focusing distance versus the 0.9 on the zeiss.

But i´m a bit worried about color rendering on the voigtlander. I have CV 21mm which is kind of strange and muted in colors. Not sure it applies to all CV lenses?

Any sound advice? I won't buy a Summilux again, even if I could afford it. And I would like a fairly quick lens.

Out of interest what did you not like about the summilux?

What is your budget - it is hard for people to advise if the budget ceiling isn't specified.

It is too expensive :)

I won't be using the 50 for more than maybe 10% of my shots. My main lens is the Summilux 35.

I would like it if the lens didn't cost more then the Zeiss, but I'm no stranger to buying used lenses.

Why is the modern Summarit not in your frame?

I think it is too slow. Forgot to mention that I have owned this lens as well in the past. I thought it was a bit boring.

And I also forgot to mention that I have owned a Noctilux 0.95 and a Canon 50 1.4 LTM :D

(Not counting all the Canon and Nikon 50s..)

I'd take a look at the Summarit-M 50mm or a second hand Summicron-M (latest sperical) they go for about 800-900 euro.

Thanks, I have bee thinking those thoughts myself, but i think I would like that extra stop of light somehow. Maybe I just have to bite the summilux-bullet.....

(Just to point out. I have owned both those lenses. And they are great, but.....)

I have heard good stories about the Sonnar 50 by Carl Zeiss, but I don't like the focus shift... I like the rendering though.

Yes, focus shift and the pesky 0.9m minimum focus distance is whats holding med back from the Zeiss.

I have tried the new CV 50. This shot is from the CV 50 1,5. Taken at 1.5 in the store.

Too difficult with the mixed lights to tell about the color, but the sharpness seems ok.

I think the question really is if anyone has tried the CV 50 1,5 ASPH and their thoughts about it compared to other modern well performing 50s.

I compared it directly to the Summilux ASPH.

results:

-great lens, especially for the price

-sharp at every aperture, but not as sharp as the summilux (the summilux is sharper at any image area, at any aperture from 1.4 to 8. doesnt mean the nokton sux. the differences are quite subtle from f/4 onwards)

-nokton has weird bokeh, compared to the smoothness of the summilux

-nokton has focus shift, none at 1.5, worst at 2.8, gone by 5.6

-i would prefer the black version to the chrome (nokton) while I prefer the chrome summilux to the black one

the nokton gives a nice performance and is a good lens but the summilux is just better in every regard

on a budget I'd either get the planar or the nokton (if the summarit is out of reach)

Thanks Marc! That was exactly the information I was looking for. Many, many thanks! :)
