Thank you to everyone who took part in January's Barnack's Monthly with over 300 pictures contributed for the first time! Thank you in particular to those people who posted for the first time - I hope you found it an interesting and rewarding experience and I hope it encourages you to share more of your pictures with us! A huge thank you also to the stalwarts who continue to support this thread - you know who you are - please each give yourself a pat on the back from me.:)

The Barnack's Monthly theme for February 2014 is: SYMBOL.

This means any picture featuring any symbol or something which stands for or implies something else. For example it could be a picture including a company trademark, a logo on a building or van, a tattoo, sky-writing, a platform number at a railway station, a symbol of spring in the form of snowdrops or daffodils, a symbol of autumn with russet red leaves, snow, icicles, graffiti tags, supermarket signs, car badges, camera logos - it's entirely your choice so let your imagination run free! It would be a help if you give your picture a title so to help us understand your point of view but it's not compulsory.

The rules are deliberately loose so please go out and shoot with this month's theme in mind or start searching back through those pictures you took oh-so long ago that you'd forgotten about and start posting. It doesn't have to be your best ever shot and it's not a competition so you might surprise the rest of us and yourself - it's just about sharing some pictures, seeing others' take on the topic, and enjoying it!

Everybody's welcome to contribute, any interpretation, any number of posts, pictures that have been posted on the forum before, any equipment as long as it and the photo complies with the forum's rules. Please post freely - especially newcomers and please remember there's no judging or criticism (good or bad) in this thread. So, if you'd like to show your acknowledgement or appreciation that someone has posted their picture then instead of posting a comment please use the "Thanks" button that you can find at the bottom right of every post.

Pete.

In the north of Brazil, you can find many artefacts used in rituals, one of which is a Devil (Exu) who is one of the Orishas or deities used in Candomble, originating in African culture (Yoruba) it represents "communication". Exu is an irascible character and can do good but can also provoke disasters and strife between the people who ignore him. He is human in the sense of being fickle - as the word on the street goes, he is a child. So, also to me, these "Devils" are "Children" (in many cultures called "little devils"). Making them large from cardboard I wanted them to speak loud, be confrontational, telling the uncomfortable truth. As children they are spontaneous, impulsive, curious, inventive and capable of uncontrollable creativity.

Does ring several bells, though.

According to the museum's description, the statue does not attempt to physically depict an accurate representation of the athlete at this particular moment but rather an idealized abstraction of the effort.
