Hi,

this is my first post,

i've lately become intrigued with the Thambar, and I see quite a few people here have been too,

and I see them pop up on ebay every now and then, and sometimes at a "reasonable" -ish price,

so before taking the plunge, I'd like to know if there are some ways to spot a fake one ...

thx !!!

I would imagine most are legit. Old lenses have issues with glass discolouration, pitting, scratching, softening, fungus, haze, decentered elements, broken focus hardware etc etc etc. The list is long. One that is high priced by a dealer is more likely to be clean and working properly. A cheap one off eBay is probably very hit and miss, most likely miss. It would pay to get one from a dealer with some kind of warranty.

There is an historical "Thambarski" made in USSR, but is a very rough copy... and with max aperture 2,8... engraved Leitz Wetzlar - Thambar etc... but is easy to recognize (and maybe, rarer than a genuine Thambar)

Conditions commands the price, on a very wide range, because many are very battled : I saw one for sale at 300 Euros...and was even without RF coupling...

As you say,a very intriguing lens, capable of very odd pics

Hi Luigi, beautiful picture. Have you tried the centre spot filter on any other lenses?

An idea that, strangely, never came to my mind... :o : good advice !! Let me think... is an E48.... I'll try on an old Summicron 90... and onto the first Telyt 200, too...
