Does distance to the subject matter when I test the lens sharpness?

Today I made my own chart on a wall in the room, and the behavior is the same.

What do you think, is it better to send a lens for a replacement to the store rather than repair to NJ? Here are the results from my own test chart, size 1:1. Bottom left, right, than Top left, right, than center and the full image.

Maybe I could use this lens for making landscape postcards, and no issues at all.

PS don't make fun of my test chart!!! :D

I would get a new copy if possible! I have had the same experience... so I have no problems buying in on your observations. I took me some time as well to accept "what I saw" because I did not think it could happen I guess... But In the end, I just could not live with that lens! Lenses are not perfect... and I can take a lot of corner softness... BUT the softness MUST be equal or even on left side and right side!

Very happy user of a lot of other Leica lenses though:D

Good luck! Stein

I guess I had better not test my lenses or I would become very upset. Currently they seem to perform very well with what I shoot.

Hi

No "testing" in my case, but real photography obvious observation... So, in general I totally agree with you!

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, today I have received a replacement lens for 21SEM that I was complaining about. All though, this one looks good in the left side of the picture it seems it has a problem on the right side. The first one was perfect on the right side, but horible on the left side. This one is kind of compromise, the left side became much better (yet not as good as the version one's right side), but right side became worse. I also noticed this one looks worse in the upper part than the lower part.

I took a series of shots from 0.8m with the apperture set to following values: 3.4, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, and 16. It's funny that camera recorded the last two exposures as f/4.0.

Now, I feel kind of stupid, and bad to get in contact with the seller again, and ask them for another replacement. Would someone be as kind as to check the uploaded photos, and give me his opinion about the lens' corner performance, please? The uploaded photos are shot with apertures as written above. https://www.dropbox.com/s/7thnwxkwgiuweo4/21SEM.zip

My idea is to send this lens to Leica for a repair, but I'm not sure whether they'll be able to correct this i.e. is this what the lens gives and my expectations are set to high or I was just unlucky and received two bad samples in a row.
