Travel Kit recommendations...time sensitive

21, 35, 90

If I had to choose only two lenses, I would definitely go for the 35 and 90.

The 21 SEM lacks subject separation in crowded cities, and is a pain to use at night (sunset in Paris @ 5:20 PM).

I would never leave the tele at home. So many great details to catch in both cities, such as the beautiful Gargoyles in Notre Dame.

I would take the 35 and the 90. Travel as light as you can. Don't attract attention to yourself. There will be eyes watching you.

Mr. B

I wonder about the usefulness of a 90 in a city environment, the M9 has a 1.5 crop factor no? Making that 90 a 135., the 50 into a 75. You'll need something wider for depth of field and broader views in confined spaces. The 21 can be your ~28-30 wild angle, the 35 for your normal ~50 view, and the 50 for a 75 a more telescopic image.

As for eyes, not as many eyes as in my Prague in July I suspect. I'll be toting 2 bodies, my Leica MP with a 28mm Elmarit for B&W street scenes, and my Canon EOS 5D Mk II with f/2.8 zoom lens - big glass with 82/77mm filters. The Leica is pretty discrete but the Canon is over twice as big and much noisier. Both will have Steel cabled camera straps attached to their tripod mountings to ward off the pickpockets. Then I'll also be carrying a solid one-piece English umbrella/walling stick of very hard wood for keeping the rain off, and for swatting & stabbing acquisitive 'street shoppers' if warranted.

Travelling light: 21 + 40 mm

travelling not so light: 21 + 35 + 90 mm

The problem is, all the answers here will reflect the style of the posters. You have to

follow the route you like to go with your photography. Be glad you don´t have more

lenses to choose from ...

Have a safe journey!

Best

Err no it's full frame

Well, now I'm better informed, thank you, I thought the M9 was like the M8. In any case I don't think I'd change my recommendation, the 21, 35 and 50. The 90 is pretty specialized in application.

For my own 12 day trip, where I'm luggage space constrained as well, one carry on (clothes plus one lens) plus 2 cameras, jacket & umbrella. I'm taking two lenses for digital, a16-35 and a 28-70, both f/2.8, plus a doubler for the 28-70 which will then reach out to 140, albeit at f/5.6. Frankly, I doubt I'll use the doubler, maybe while on the river. I'm leaving my 70-200 f/2.8 at home, along with the flash and tripod.

For my street photography, my Leica MP with the 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit. Almost certainly to be used exclusively for B&W, though I'm still open to the right color (Velvia?) supplement. I'm taking lessons by studying the images in the Street Photograhy forum, there are some gifted photographers here.

I suggest spreading out the coverage; in other words, the 21mm, 35 or 50, and 90. With the M9, having one of the 'luxes will be handy for low light or dim interiors. The SEM can come in handy in tight/crammed streets of Paris (haven't been to Madrid). There's always room to squeeze in a few tight frames with the tele.

What I would take is the 50mm and the 35mm for backup should something happen the 50mm; i like to keep things as simple as possible on personal trips. With more gear choices, I find myself paying less attention to the new experience and more on how to optimize my frames. YMMV.

Lucky me...off to Madrid and Paris for 8 days.

Dilemma...what 3 lenses to take with my M9P:

21 Super Elmar

35 Summilux FLE

40 Summicron

50 Summilux ASPH

90 Summicron APO

Leaving tomorrow night, so your timely reasoning will be greatly appreciated

As others have suggested 21SEM, 35FLE and 90 Crom. I recently took very similar setup that worked very well for me to Nepal which consists of the 21SEM, 35FLE and 75 ASPH Cron. Since you do not have the 75mm then the 90mm will be the next alternative in my humble opinion.

I recently traveled with 21 SEM, 35 1.4 asph pre-FLE and 90 Elmarit-M and its these focal lengths that I'd recommend. IMHO the 90 Summicron is what I'd want to take (I like the 90mm field of view in cities) but it is the least 'travel friendly' of your lenses due purely to size. For this (and other reasons), I have now picked up a 90 Tele-Elmarit which is very small. Not much help before this evening but if you take the 90 Summicron, it might be something to ponder on (T-Es are very reasonably priced still).

I was in Paris last September and took three lenses, the 21 SEM, 35 Summilux ASPH FLE, and a 50 Summilux ASPH. Most used was the 35mm which served as the default lens on my M. The 21 came in handy for close up Eiffel shots and for interior shots. The 50 for when I needed a tighter shot or for less distortion in certain people shots. This turned out to be a good combination for me.

As for Paris, your 35 will be used the most. 21 sometimes and 90 hardly at all so that leaves the 50 to take along. Why take a 40 and a 50 unless you need to save weight, then forget the 35 and 50 and take the 40.

Weight saving 21 and 40.

Non weight saving 21, 35 and 50.
