a new camera and I needed a walk...

Just before Christmas I changed my D-lux 3 for a D-lux 6 and feeling the need for a good walk picked up my camera bag which now has the D-lux 6 alongside the M9P and set off. The light was far from good, the morning had been better but as I walked the sky improved and below are the results, all taken with the D-lux 6. Hackneyed and boring shots I can hear you saying and why post.

One of my close friends of 25 years died aged 54 in September from a heart attack, I spoke to his widow 3 months later and I didn't recognise her voice. Her son, Sam had just come home from university and they had been reminiscing about her husband, his father and she was crying as she answered the phone.

I post these shots because I have not been able to get over the death of my friend. But during the walk and as I looked for shots with only the sky available as the subject the words of the last verse of "Abide with me", one of my favourite hymns, kept coming to me and are posted before the last image. And I feel a little better so perhaps taking pictures can be therapeutic or perhaps it was the good walk with just myself and the memories of my good friend for company...

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;

Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.

Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;

In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me

I understand completely how much you miss your friend. He is definitely somewhere up there waiting go see you again. Too often, we make photography too complicated when it is supposed to enrich our lives instead. I hope you will take many more walks with your camera and shoot for yourself and your friend.

David, thanks for the pictures and your story. I am most sorry for your loss. My oldest friend died about 18 months ago; we had been friends since we were both about 9 years old. It was and is very hard. I hope your friend's memory abides with you.

I too am very sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my cousin in the summer, to cancer, also aged 54. He was one of my best friends, best man at our wedding, and just a great guy. So I understand how you feel.

His loss has made me look at life differently.

I now live much more for the moment; I am sure he is smiling down on me now, knowing that having dithered and deliberated, I finally bought a Monochrom recently based on that 'new' philosophy.

I am certain that photography is therapeutic. Enjoy your DLux6 - it is a fine tool and a great companion to your M9.

Regards

David,

I am truly sorry to hear of your loss but you have shown your feelings so eloquently with these moving statements in pictures. I find them very spiritual and soothing. I find some of the most profound statements of how we feel are those that are simple and refreshing.

David,

your therapee worked. Your pictures are fine and your loss and feelings are being mirrored. The sky is bright and beneath the shadow of the earth. Maybe this is a message from your soul and we can only give support by being able to imagine the sorrow. Thanks for sharing this series and your confidence in sharing it.
