ldhrads Posted January 2, 2014 Share #1  Posted January 2, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) A couple of years ago, I purchased a 1957 Summarit 50/1.5 that was in good overall condition. Glass shows minimal cleaning marks, no scratches, some mild haze, no fungus. It probably cost about $450 at the time. It focuses nicely, has the infinity lock. It is a screw mount and i have a good m converter on it. I first used it with M7 and film, but was disappointed with the very low contrast and inability to work with the files so I shelved it for a while. I took it out to play with over the weekend and mounted it on the MM.  At full aperture it's very low contrast, which I imagine is a known property of this lens. It does get a bit more contrast when closed down to f4. I also paired it with flash just to see and it worked nicely.  Here's some shots, I'd like to get some opinions on what people think about the performance of the lens, is this typical for this type of lens? The last couple of shots of the coffee machine show the "glow" that I see with this lens at full aperture. Is this a result of some lens haze? Or is this just the way this lens looks?  Thanks for chiming in!  LDH Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted January 3, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted January 3, 2014 Very hazy, it would probably benefit from a CLA.
ldhrads Posted January 3, 2014 Author Share #3 Â Posted January 3, 2014 Thanks Jaap. I had a suspicion that this was not a "typical" look for this lens. Not having too many vintage pieces this helps me decide what to do with it!
rirakuma Posted January 3, 2014 Share #4 Â Posted January 3, 2014 I have a 5cm summarit and mine is not that hazy but a tad more glowy when handling highlights.

Not having too many vintage pieces this helps me decide what to do with it! If I were you, for use on the MM, I would buy a Canon 1.8/50 LTM of the same period as the Summarit. They can often been found cheaply in near-mint condition and it is actually my preferred 50 on the Monochrome.
UliWer Posted January 3, 2014 Share #6  Posted January 3, 2014 I'd agree with jaapv that your version shows too much haze. Here some quick examples with the M9, flash, lens detection for the pre-asph 50mm Summilux and change to b+w in Capture One with no other adjustments:  First f/1.5:  Welcome, dear visitor! At first I thought my example was really out of focus until I noticed that it's exact at f/4. I think it was usual at this time to calibrate the lenses for a middle aperture, since most users choose this, even if their reason to buy the lens was it's potential speed. algrove Posted January 3, 2014 Share #7 Â Posted January 3, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just purchased one and had to send it back. It was advertised as recently CLA'd, BUT when I got it, the lens would not focus all the way over to infinity. It stopped between 50 and 100 feet. I looked at some and noticed they focused to the infinity line. It has gone back, awaiting refund.
