But a 28mm Summilux, what will that really offer? All that is going to happen is people demonstrating the awesome sharpness and awesome bokeh by making the same pictures of sunsets that they've always made. It won't change the world[...]

The same can be said for the 35 Summilux.

Some people just prefer 28 to 35. Why shouldn't they have a Summilux option ?

Assuming people will use a 28 lens just to "shoot sunsets" and "demonstrate bokeh" is like calling us a bunch of suckers. Thanks a lot.

I am disappointed though that Leica is progressively phasing out the Elmarit-M. I wouldn't be surprised if the 28 Elmarit-M is phased out when the 28 Summilux comes out.

So all that is left at the "low end" is the $4300 Summicron?

The 28 Elmarit-M ASPH, from Leica's website:

"Due to its attractive price it can be particularly recommended as an introduction to the high-quality range of Leica M lenses."

Not saying it couldn't happen, but...

How about a small Summicron like a modern version of the summicron 35 v.4.?

I love it for its size and lightness but it could do with upgraded performance.

I love the summiluxes but sometimes I would like to have something really small and light without going past f2.

Agree. I like to have a full range of E39 Leica lenses which can share filters if necessary. Give me more new E39's. We now have current E39 like: 28/2.8; 35/2; 50/2 (2 models); 90/4. I also carry an old 135/4 Elmar.

I would buy smaller aperture 21mm and 24 lenses if they took E39 filters, at the moment the only options are the Voigtländer Color Skopar Pancake lenses -- particularly if Leica could get the distortion down to the levels of the Zeiss Biogon 21mm f4.5 ZM lens.

I really appreciate the trick Leica pulled off with the Macro-Elmar- M 90mm f/4.0 with its combination of high quality, close focus and a packed size that is just like a 50mm lens, and it uses an E39 filter thread.

We have so many perfected and corrected lenses now and I wish, more than anything, we could have a range of lenses, even if it were small range, that were a nice balance of correction and character, leaning more towards the character. Some wow factor. I really think there is a market for it.

Pleeeeease Leica.

If the 21 is anything to go by, we lost the Elmarit when we got the Super Elmarit (which must be better, else it wouldn't be super!) Saying that, I can't see them offering a 28/3.4, it'd have to be cheep as chips, or really special, like a 28AA.

On topic, I'd like to see an E39 21mm, to go with the 28,35,50,90. Long term, I'd like some standard filters going on, E46 seems like the new standard until you go past 50mm, then what? You're left with a wacky selection of random filters, not very elegant Leica...

I'm also thinking that Leica would like to eventually complete the Summilux range, so that they have a Summilux lens from 21mm to 50mm (or even up to 75mm). I'm betting on a 28mm Summilux this year, or maybe a re-installment of the 75mm Summilux, who knows. Anyways, my guesses:

14mm f/3.4 (because it's the year 2014)

28mm f/1.4

75mm f/1.4

21/24/28mm f/4 Tri-Elmar, similar to the 16/18/21 f/4 Tri-Elmar. Then two lenses would be enough to cover the Frankenfinder range.

Honestly, if the above 4 lenses were released, what else is (realistically) missing in the M-mount range from Leica? It looks rather complete, save a few cosmetic designs here and there (focus tabs missing, stupid hood design, inconsistent filter sizes, etc.).

Michael,

Off-topic, as regards the 21 Super Elmar M, Leica must think it's better or they wouldn't have gone to the trouble of making it. Maybe the drop in speed allowed the performance to be pushed beyond the Elmarit. That's a trend Puts has mentioned; a splitting of the lens line-up into two camps.
