Bad Nocti - Mr Magoo still alive and working at Leica

My brand new Noctilux has a focus problem. The RF and LV focus do not coincide by some margin at distance. It is definitely the lens and not the M240 camera, as three other lenses are just fine (135 T-E, 90 Elmarit-M and 75 Summarit) where the RF coincides exactly with the LV focus peaking.

 

I had hoped that Leica might have pensioned off Mr. Magoo who it seems they use to check the focus on all Leica lenses, in spite of his being legally blind but it would appear not. This really is not good enough on a £7000+ lens.

 

I will contact Andrea and see what she wants to do - repair or replace.

I am beginning to wonder about Leica.

 

When a company expands fast, the skilled labor to train/supervise/and perform difficult tasks is in short supply.

 

True. But you would expect the assembly and final check of such a lens to be performed by their most qualified employees.

You don’t need an expert now with the M240 to check focus on a lens. I did it in two minutes comparing LV zoomed focus and focus peaking with RF coincidence at various distances. It really couldn’t be easier.

I'd rather a machine did it. It can't have an opinion, it doesn't get tired, it doesn't want to go for a smoke, it doesn't listen to music, it doesn't want to scratch its arse.:D

I've seen Leica QC dropping since the eighties to the point where i appoint one of my dealers to redo the QC himself now. Asks 180 to 250 EUR for one lens depending on the model. My dealers did this for free in the old days but Magoo had a better sight then...

Really? A dealer that charges for just doing his job by checking that he is not selling faulty goods on request would not be my dealer. That means he is just a camera pusher.

That is a nine thousand Euro lens for crying out loud. Is it too much trouble to put a body on a tripod, take a few shots at varying distances and check them against the EVF if it makes your buyer happy?

Hardly useful to avoid stiff focus rings, camera lockups, cracked or dirty sensors and other Magoo's oddities i'm afraid. I don't know for you but i would never return a new lens or body to Solms personally. No time enough on hands and i don't pay to be treated like that. I would rather issue a writ but life is too short so this old Leica shop tests my gear in depth and gives me exactly what i want. YMMV.

I would appreciate if anyone could advise me if I have used the correct email address for Andrea in the service department. Outlook crashed on my Mac a couple of months ago, had to be reinstalled, then refused to load the old identity from the back up, so I lost all my saved email addresses (the love affair with Microsoft continues). I have used first name dot last name at leica-camera.com. The email has not been rejected by the leica-camera.com server, so I hope I got it right by guesswork.

Sorry to hear that. Terribly disappointing and unacceptable. Rather than mucking about sending it back to Solms, your dealer should be replacing it. As is documented elsewhere on the forum, when my new MM died last month after only 4 days, my dealer replaced it without quibble. His view was that it was ' Solms' problem, not yours' and that he would just get a credit note for it from Leica.

 

I do hope that this is sorted out rapidly for you.

I have gone off for a trip over Christmas and have left the lens behind, in the hope that Leica service might arrange a pick up before I get back. I don’t want to use it if it is to be exchanged. If I sent it back to the German dealer, insured courier would cost me €130. If I do it with Leica, it all gets done on their account, as I am on the registered professional scheme. I have advised the dealer but have not heard back from them yet.

The address is correct, but I'm not sure if she will be in Monday, so I would follow up with a call if I were you. It might be that you need Mr. Kaufmann. ( not that Mr. Kaufmann;))

Well it might be good to be in touch with the Doctor. He's unlikely to be in Solms though, more likely partying in Salzburg or Zell am See or wherever the Austrian mega-rich hang out at Christmas.

 

Sorry thy've let you down, my Noctilux is fine on my M Typ 240.

 

Edit: Having said that, focussing with this lens is so critical that I do tend to use LV in preference even to the improved M Typ 240 rangefinder.

I suspect I too will end up mainly focusing with the EVF but I want the lens to have a correct RF as well, given the eye-watering price. It beats me that this lens got out of the door, it is so obviously wrong. I have now checked my M240 with another few lenses and it is spot on with all of them, even my old Summicron-C.
