Basically, it was the lower priced of the two base models with the memory upgraded from the standard 12gb to 16gb and the storage solid state drive at 500gb. Currently my mac mini has 16 gb of RAM and I am running out of space on my 250gb on the solid state drive, which I use only for applications. I also added the Promise Thunderbolt RAID system because I'll need external memory and AppleCare for $250--I think. Cost came to well over $5,000. I am sure it is a great system and Apple should charge what it can get for it, but the days of the $3,000 computer are now at least a decade behind us, so this is a nonstarter. The one thing I actually love about it is the multiple ports. With everything being a peripheral these days, there are never enough ports on your standard consumer computer.. The new Pro aims at video editing where traditional hard drives can be a bottle neck, and at this price point the additional cost of using solid state is not a problem. Tromp Posted December 25, 2013 Share #9 Posted December 25, 2013 Actually the new Mac Pro is "cheap" see the article on Apple Insider:-)(Apple's new Mac Pro a better value than the sum of its parts) I ordered one the day you could order but delivery is in February. To me this is the machine we have been waiting for so long. Thunderbolt is fantastic. Not just the fastest but it replaces almost all others (firewire, ethernet, display) I did not (yet) order a 4K display as they will drop in price, I expect. Now with the (IMO) stupid Adobe subscription system I wish Apple would bring us their version of Photoshop as they already have Aperture. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

To me 1TB is enough for the system and programs etc. For the data I bought a Promise Pegasus R6 external Thunderbolt system (plug and play!). And yes there will be happy faces for those that get my firewire drives etc:-) Its (to me) a bit like buying a Leica. You know they are extremely expensive but also the best and when you have one you use it all the time. I know about the money. The array comes with SATA HDD. My "old" Mac Pro from 2008 will be replaced and I ordered the new Mac Pro and I don't like the Feb delivery as well. I put a dual set of SSD in the old Mac and I'll just order the 4 disk enclosure and will put the SSD for fast data I/O and a set of 1TB raid as backup. Let's see how that will work. I looked in more detail at the single thunderbolt Pegasus R4 enclosure, but unfortunately it does not do what I want, 2 SSDs (non raid) and 2 HDDs as raid. It can only treat it as either all drives in Raid or non in Raid. I found a nice 2 disk enclosure and I bought it. I use it with my 2 HDD currently in Raid 0 on the USB and switch over to Thunderbolt with the new MacPro. I'll get me second one for the SSDs and it should be in good shape. The advantage so far, even with the slower USB, I can prepare the drives now ... The cost is $300, so more or less the same as the Pegasus enclosure... disadvantage is the two dual disk enclosures, so a bit more space. Now the new MacPro can come ...
