woorob Posted December 18, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted December 18, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) For the M with an EVF, this lens seems compelling. When purchased new from B & H or other Leica dealers, are they 6-bit coded?
Advertisement Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Hi woorob, Take a look here 135mm APO 3.4 -- are the latest versions 6-bit coded?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

Bill W Posted December 18, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted December 18, 2013 I bought mine new about 6 months ago and it came coded. The same dealer had one a month before that was at Leica NJ and it was not coded. Leica did not have the part to code it either. I waited. If it is new stock, it should be but if a dealer has one that sat around, it might not be. I would check befor buying.

woorob Posted December 19, 2013 Author Share #5 Â Posted December 19, 2013 Thanks guys. I ordered one this morning from Ken Hansen. He received it just yesterday from Leica so it's coded, but apparently they added the factory coding only fairly recently. Â How do you like the lens? jaapv Posted December 19, 2013 Share #6 Â Posted December 19, 2013 Happy - I had mine third-party coded, as it is an older lens. In retrospect however, I find myself wondering whether the Tele-Elmar is not a better buy, as it is close behind the Apo Telyt in image quality, yet not too expensive on the used market. mirekti Posted December 19, 2013 Share #7  Posted December 19, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use it with the 1.35x magnifier, and even it is my least used lens, I didn't regret buying it. In some situations it's a life saver. I find this thread interesting summilux.net • Afficher le sujet - M9 et APO-TELYT 3.4/
woorob Posted December 19, 2013 Author Share #8 Â Posted December 19, 2013 I'm thinking that the M, with its EVF, will open some new horizons for this lens. I'm also hoping that it's better than the really excellent 135 f/4 I had about 10 years ago. We'll see.

It also works quite well on the Sony A7r. Mine is not coded but for long lenses, I am not sure if there is any real need for coding (other than showing up properly in exif). lct Posted December 25, 2013 Share #10 Â Posted December 25, 2013 Just ordered a new coded one as well. Should justify the EVF i guess but i'm curious to see how it focus with the M240's rangefinder.

Should justify the EVF i guess but i'm curious to see how it focus with the M240's rangefinder. Â I have an EVF, and don't use it at all. I also have a 1.35x magnifier. In the meantime, I tried to take some photos without the magnifier, and was surprised I could hit the focus easily. However, I would recommend a magnifier as it enlarges the patch and brings speed to the focusing. At least in my case.

Normally the effective base length of the rangefinder is too short for a 135/3.4 at full aperture w/o magnifier but the M240 works so well with the 90/2 apo that i wonder if my hit rate will be as bad as i expect on the paper. lct Posted January 2, 2014 Share #14 Â Posted January 2, 2014 No worry at all. Juts shot a dozen snaps with my new 6-bit sample but it is indeed as easy to focus with the RF as my 90/2 apo. Never felt so comfortable with a 135 since the M3. Not sure if i will use the EVF with that one. Kudos Leica.
marknorton Posted January 3, 2014 Share #15 Â Posted January 3, 2014 Whatever they have done to the rangefinder in the M Typ 240 has been one of the unsung (by Leica) surprises. It's funny how Leica marketing come out with all kinds of nonsense about things which are marginal at best yet when there is a worthwhile improvement, they say nothing. Â It's almost as if a bullet point of "improved rangefinder precision" would be taken as a sign of weakness and less than perfection of the previous version. lct Posted January 3, 2014 Share #16 Â Posted January 3, 2014 Hard to prove scientifically i guess. The least focus problem would give rise to outcries on the web.
jaapv Posted January 3, 2014 Share #17 Â Posted January 3, 2014 Mark dislikes it Seriously - it simply has been improved. More modern manufacturing methods make for smaller tolerances thus for less slop in the mechanism. I guess Leica regards it as just a routine improvement and not a major update, so did not mention it (although I recall Stephen Daniel saying something in an interview at the introduction)
