Concerning Big Stopper and 21 Super-Elmar

i've recently acquired b+w big stopper E46 to be used with my E46 lenses, and just yesterday, i actually had the chance to use it. What happened is there's a strong flare type (white vignette) at the bottom of every images when i use the big stopper on my 21 Super-Elmar. At first, i thought it was flare from a bright sunlight hitting at just the right angle, so i went on ahead and did a wall test in a closed room and sure enough the same flare vignette thing is still present. i've never encountered this type of vignette, so i thought it was a faulty filter, but just by turning it i came to realize that it is not the case.

a little later still in a closed room, i put this big stopper on my 50lux Asph to see if it will exhibit the same effect. no such effect is present when used with the 50lux.

Anyone with experience with the big stopper and wide angle lens?..especially this combo.

Thank You in advance.

Interesting, I just got myself a 21 sem and I hope it won't have this problem. I'll post some results in a few days.

the lens is in perfect order and is a wonderful lens. My preferred travel companion. The issue only comes up when i put on the E46 Big Stopper. Even when i put on the 3 stop B+W E46 filter, everything is great. I'm just rather stump why this (whatever this is) happens and if so why only on one of the corners

It has to be light reflected off the front element and hitting the edge of the filter rim inside. I am sure that when you screw the filter on it tightens to the same place. Of course I may not have a clue what I am talking about.

It's a light leak that also shows up in pictures made with the M9 or MM. It has been covered in discussions on the M9 forum. It isn't lens specific.

Only long exposures show it up and it comes from the top of the lens mount near to where the focus cam cutout is on the lens. It can be avoided by wrapping a baffle around the lens ( some people use a hair scrunchy) or even just shading it with your hand.

I found the thread about the light leak problem

probably something unnoticed until 'Big Stoppers' started to be used more widely.

Steve, many thanks for referring me to that thread. I had no knowledge of it. After reading it, i've been enlightened. As for my case, it is indeed a light leak! The leak actually came from the mount lock in my case. At the button you press to mount and unmount, if you inspect closely, there is a gap there. After many tests of torching that hole, so far only my 21 SEM has this problem!...interesting indeed. My 50 lux and my 35 lux fle is safe. A normal phenomenon on the 21 SEM...? or is it random?
