LeicaFan Posted December 17, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted December 17, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Recently, acquired 35mm summicron-m for the Leica M8. It's great but i'm now scouting for a wide angle and zoom lens. Â Keeping in mind, there will be an upgrade to fullframe (eg. M9) once the M8 retires. Â I will be more cost conscious as wide and zoom is not what i'll be shooting the most. What range or lens do you guys suggest? Â Â much appreciated. lphong Posted December 17, 2013 Share #2  Posted December 17, 2013 Elmarit 24mm and a Summicron 75mm?  The Elmarit does require an external viewfinder, which will set you back another £600 (new) or so.
LeicaFan Posted December 17, 2013 Author Share #3 Â Posted December 17, 2013 I'm still new to leica. What framelines does the M8 have?
Printmaker Posted December 17, 2013 Share #4  Posted December 17, 2013 I'm still new to leica. What framelines does the M8 have?  24,28,35.50,75,90  24 & 35 come up together 50 & 75 come up together 28 & 90 come up together  You can also use a 135 Elmarit with eyes/goggles which magnify the 90 mm frame yielding a 180 FOV. Under 24 mm requires a finder. I used a 28 mm finder for my 21 mm lens. If you want 21 mm FOV use a 15 mm lens with a 21 mm finder.  I used 21/35/90/135 on my M8 and later added a 50. I use the same lenses on my M9.
LeicaFan Posted December 17, 2013 Author Share #5 Â Posted December 17, 2013 since the m8 has 24mm framelines. is there any reason, why elmarit 24mm need an external viewfinder?
IWC Doppel Posted December 17, 2013 Share #6 Â Posted December 17, 2013 Emlarit-M ASPH 24mm, lovely with the M8 and a superb lens on both the M8 and the M9, followed by a 50mm, I personally love the Elmar-M f2.8 and the pre-asph Summilux

Ecar Posted December 17, 2013 Share #8 Â Posted December 17, 2013 If cost is important: the CV 21/4 is very good on the M8, but shows some red edges on the M9. You'll need a 28mm finder for the M8 - or use the edges of the frame to guesstimate composition. I'd look at Zeiss too, but I haven't used Zeiss wides, so can't comment on these. regarding tele lenses (there are no zooms in the Leica M world... ), I'd go for a Summarit 75 or 90. LeicaFan Posted December 17, 2013 Author Share #10  Posted December 17, 2013 If I already have 35mm, what's the next wider lens t get?  I can't get to test the lens, so I dunno what width I'm expecting. There's so many. Cv 15mm, 18mm, 21, 24mm, and 28mm   Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Printmaker Posted December 17, 2013 Share #11 Â Posted December 17, 2013 The 28 Elmarit ASPH was released at the same time as the M8 and is the perfect companion to this camera in both form and function. However, since you have a 35 mm lens already, I'd skip the 28 focal length and go to directly to the 24. That is, unless you wear glasses and can not see the 24 mm frame lines in the finder. In that case, you're probably better off going to a 21 and using an auxiliary 28 mm finder. Â However, may I suggest that before you purchase a lens, spend some time using the frame preview lever and take a hike. Use the lever to preview potential photo compositions and note which frame (lens) works best for your way of seeing the world. Then your next lens choice is based on your vision and not the vision of other photographers.

But what does it need to get it looking on the leica m8?  Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I have the Leica 21mm and it is great on my M8; one of my favourite lenses. Even wider on the M9, yet remarkably distortion-free.
NJH Posted December 23, 2013 Share #16 Â Posted December 23, 2013 The 28 Elmarit ASPH was released at the same time as the M8 and is the perfect companion to this camera in both form and function. Â I agree, I have that lens and an M8. If I was dedicated to the M8 only I would pair the 28 Elmarit ASPH with the 75 summarit.
Printmaker Posted December 23, 2013 Share #17  Posted December 23, 2013 The 21mm zeiss lens looks good. But what does it need to get it looking on the leica m8?  Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk  I used the 21 Zeiss on my M8. Earlier versions bring up the 50 mm frame so if you purchase used make sure the 28 mm framelines come up otherwise you'll need a new flange. The latest Zeiss lenses have a grove to allow you to hand code the lens (as a 21 mm Elmarit (pre ASPH).  I am probably the only person to get a bad copy of this lens. Mine took considerable adjustment to bring infinity into focus. I eventually replaced it with a 21 SEM. Others love this lens so I guess I was just unlucky. RSo Posted January 5, 2014 Share #18 Â Posted January 5, 2014 M8 user here for about 1.5 years first lens was a cv 40 f1.4, went with cv 28mm f1.9 as my second lens. (so first lens is 50mm equivalent, second lens is 35mm equivalent) The 40 f1.4 focus shift quite a lot at f2.8 and f4, so remember to lean back. Also, during focusing, the throw is smooth only after it gets going, it takes slightly more effort to get the focus going in the first place. So far no complaints about the 28 f1.9...other than needing more light for my m8... Â p.s. also tried the zm 35 f2...it is spectucular! But at the time I was stupid and wanted a f1.4 lens...Obviously the IQ out of zeiss is much better than the voigtlanders
