Frozen In Time

I've heard of this happening but this is the first time I've seen it. A Mallard hen stayed still too long last night as temperatures went well below zero F, and she got frozen into the river ice. She was dead by the time I saw her this afternoon. X Vario

maybe was already ill, if not i dont think she will stay untill water waz frozed

I think what happens is that they tuck their head back into the fluffy part behind their neck and fall asleep. This patch of water was open yesterday but quickly froze when the temperature dropped last night. By the time this one woke up, its legs were frozen into the ice.

 

I'm going to check again in the morning and its my guess that sometime tonight a raptor or other creature will have a duck dinner.

I had to pull a dog out several years ago after it went through thin ice and couldn't crawl out. I almost went in myself but it was close enough to shore that I would have been okay. I just got very wet and cold. The dog's owner kept walking as if completely unconcerned it all. I was really pissed at him.
