fotografr Posted December 12, 2013 Share #1  Posted December 12, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've heard of this happening but this is the first time I've seen it. A Mallard hen stayed still too long last night as temperatures went well below zero F, and she got frozen into the river ice. She was dead by the time I saw her this afternoon. platypus Posted December 12, 2013 Share #2 Â Posted December 12, 2013 Oh no! After just looking at your mourning dove photo...and now this! I've heard of this happening too, but never seen it, well...now we know it's not a rural legend. A very interesting shot.
Northwest Wanderer Posted December 12, 2013 Share #3 Â Posted December 12, 2013 Brent, Â Good capture of nature (not by Disney). Sad but nature can be cruel.

I've seen it happen myself. Ducks and geese can get stuck in a quick freeze. Sad but true.
fotografr Posted December 13, 2013 Author Share #6 Â Posted December 13, 2013 I think what happens is that they tuck their head back into the fluffy part behind their neck and fall asleep. This patch of water was open yesterday but quickly froze when the temperature dropped last night. By the time this one woke up, its legs were frozen into the ice. Â I'm going to check again in the morning and its my guess that sometime tonight a raptor or other creature will have a duck dinner.
pauledell Posted December 13, 2013 Share #7 Â Posted December 13, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Brent, Â A fine shot of a sad event. That is a shame. I seen a deer being rescued by firemen from a lake where she fell through the ice the other day on TV. Thankfully this story came out well. fotografr Posted December 13, 2013 Author Share #8 Â Posted December 13, 2013 I had to pull a dog out several years ago after it went through thin ice and couldn't crawl out. I almost went in myself but it was close enough to shore that I would have been okay. I just got very wet and cold. The dog's owner kept walking as if completely unconcerned it all. I was really pissed at him.
Karl G Posted December 14, 2013 Share #9 Â Posted December 14, 2013 Poignant picture and excellently composed. If it's any consolation, odds favor that the hen died of age or disease and was a straggler. The healthy birds seem to do just fine even when it is ridiculously cold. Iduna Posted December 14, 2013 Share #10 Â Posted December 14, 2013 Brent, by its monochrome colors and precise compsition it emphasizes the drama nature bears.
