Old Dog, New Tricks: My experience with an M 240 & APO Summicron 75mm ASPH

As someone who has dragged their feet for many years before embracing digital, and more specifically, a digital Leica, I couldn't be happier with my decision to do so. Yes, I still miss the experience of using my film MP's and will look for opportunities to use them again someday. But I'm finding the M 240 to be a worthy alternative that offers a familiar tactile and fully involved shooting experience, with the added benefit of convenience, immediacy, and ultimately, some cost savings. The digital workflow is cumbersome and uninspiring, but even that I'm starting to get more comfortable with and finding something that works for me (Lightroom, Nik Efex, etc.).

After purchasing the M a couple weeks back, I then set out to add a few of the ASPH lenses as well to compliment a more modern way of picture making--at least those that I could afford. I just got an APO Summicron 75mm, and I absolutely love it. It offers a great compromise (without compromise) to the 50 and 90, both of which I find wanting in the close quarters of my new city of Chicago. The Summicron 75 and 35 ASPH are proving to be a nice and simple combination, and have just sent my trusted Summilux 50 pre-ASPH out for 6-bit coding. The rendering and resolution of the 75 is amazing (although I'm less concerned with sharpness/resolution in general). None the less, it's inspiring me and I'm very happy with the new focal length and quality of this lens.

I just wanted to share that an old dog can learn (and embrace) a few new tricks.

I think you made the right choice (mainly because it happens to be my own choice when I got my M9 in 2010, and I still like the combination a lot). Your images show that you´ve already become fluent with them!

For myself, I´ve recently bought a Summilux Asph for special situations when I want just one lens. Its character is quite similar to the 75 Cron, but the 75 has that little extra something…

So my normal kit is still the 35 + 75 Asph´s, just as when I bought the gear.

Glad you are happy, but you cannot at once speak of "new tricks" and "a familiar tactile ... shooting experience". Your M is essentially like any film M, only the images are recorded differently. I too am an old dog, but I got friendly with my Olympus digital SLRs pretty easily.
