Northwest Wanderer Posted December 6, 2013 Share #1  Posted December 6, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Every year about this time, Bald Eagles flock to a local lake to dine on spent salmon. Once the supply is exhausted or the lake freezes over the eagles continue on their winter migration. November, December and part of January you can find me at the lake viewing these magnificent birds. Fair warning, I'll be posting many eagle pictures the next few weeks. Welcome, dear visitor! Northwest Wanderer Posted December 8, 2013 Author Share #12 Â Posted December 8, 2013 Thank you Hank, Stig & Iduna. Â Hank, I'm lucky to live in an area along the eagles migration path. Â Stig, glad you mentioned the eye. It's what makes the image work. Â Iduna, I used a V-Lux 4 and estimate it was set around 300mm. for this shot. The image has been cropped slightly on the left side.

Bill,  I hope you don't have many wind farms in your area. Some locations are reporting a huge amount of bird of prey casualties because of wind farms and they are exempt from federal prosecution for the deaths even though the law requires it.  Paul
Northwest Wanderer Posted December 8, 2013 Author Share #14 Â Posted December 8, 2013 Paul, Â I'm happy to say we don't have any wind farms in my area. My area is to mountainous and timber covered for wind farms to be economically practical. I've seen enough wind turbines throughout the west to have a dislike for them. leicanut2 Posted December 9, 2013 Share #15 Â Posted December 9, 2013 Very Nice, we have a mated pair close to my home here in Ohio but because it is a nesting pair by law they have a large area of the marsh out of bounds so need a really long lens or really really lot of luck to get a good eagle picture. This year two babys fledged. Was a really nice site to see 4 eagles flying around. Â Looking forward to more eagle pictures, Cheers Jan

In my area we have a lot of resident eagles but the real show is during the winter migration when the northern birds stop over at the local lake to eat salmon. Fish & Game makes sure the birds are respected.

Northwest Wanderer Posted December 10, 2013 Author Share #18 Â Posted December 10, 2013 Leicatraveller, Â Good question about the eagles name. I hope this explanation helps. Â Some people say this bird was given the name "Bald eagle" because the lighter feathers on its head make the bird appear bald from a distance. In fact, the word "bald" comes from the old English term "balde" which originally meant white, not hairless. Â The bald eagle's scientific name, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, stands for: sea (halo), eagle (aeetos) and white (leukos), as in the feathers on the eagle's head. So there you have it, the bald eagle is a seabird with a white head.
