Mike if you're considering the nocti please also look into the focus throw. The newer version apparently has shorter focus throw compared to the previous but I own the v4 and I find it difficult to get a quick focus, by that I mean for moving subjects. Its also quite big and heavy as others have mentioned and I feel that its character is pretty much present in nearly all apertures at close to medium focusing distance. I'm not a nocti advocate in fact I really like its rendering but unfortunately I haven't really been able to utilise it properly. If you look at Sean Sweeney's photos with the nocti you will see some superb samples with a consistent nocti look on them, I think he's a member here too.

Borge I think your statement of nocti being a supercharged summilux is very true although I guess nocti tends to show vortex-ish bokeh. I actually really like the focus tabs and find it much easier to focus quickly with them but different strokes for different folks. I've also been a big fan of your work btw :)

thank you to everyone for all the feedback. it was a help to my process and made me think in a more complete way......as much as is possible from where i sit right now.

i did choose the lens which i observed resulted in the most appealing look to my eyes.....the 50/f:0.95 Noctilus. it's on the way to me.

i know i'll need to find at least one more smaller lens to use, likely something used and modestly priced for now. but that choice is a different one than the subject of this thread.

My opinion: Do what you need to do to make yourself happy. I've used the 50 Summicron for years. It just plain works as a great lens for making photographs. I wouldn't trade mine for any other 50. I don't shoot in dark nightclubs or dim alleys, which I stay away from anyway, so I don't need $:1.4 or $1.2. The rendering of my 50 is sharp and more natural. Besides, anything too "bokeh-ish" seems a bit forced IMO. If you need faster lenses, get one, but I bet most rarely get used wide open. Whatever you get, use it often. No fussy cases, no bags, no caps, zippers etc...Practice with it as much as you can, keep it ready, and make photographs. These cameras and lenses are great tools, and will reward greatly you if you use them often. Sorry for getting off-track there...Good luck.

thanks Larry.

you are not off track.....'use it often, keep it ready, and make photographs'.....sage advice to a newbie. I will make sure it's a tool, not a trophy.

cheers,

Mike

Congratulation on the imminent arrival of your new Noct, Mike. I think you will find it to be a magical lens. One that, when shot wide open, gives you a signature unique in small format photography.

Having long since fallen down the rabbit hole you are just now descending - I own five Leica 50's, among others - the one bit of advice I'd offer might sound strange, but I'll suggest it anyway: regardless of how many lenses you acquire, use them one at a time. Pick one and leave it on your camera for many weeks or months. By doing that you'll come to understand the nuances of how each draws and, ultimately, how they differ. More importantly, you'll find yourself thinking much more about light and imagery, and a great deal less debating with yourself about gear.

thanks Jeff, that does not sound strange at all. I have considerable respect for the demands that the Noct will put on me, and also that aspects of it's short focus throw and size will be frustrating (as Rirakuma also wisely mentions above). i'll have to hang in there to figure that out. i'll keep in mind your advice as i go forward. i owe it to the lens and myself to persevere.

in my other hobby my gear collection is quite over the top, so trust me i can relate to 5 Leica 50's, among others, not sure i'll get there but who knows. right now i'll settle for becoming competent with the Noctilus.

Hi Mike,

I hope you enjoy your new lens - I love mine. One piece of advice Edmond Terakopian (spelling?) gave me was not to try to use it wide open all the time. Use the entire aperture range.

Have fun.

Cheers

John

just unpacked it, and attached it and took a few shots.

it is heavier, but very balanced and solid, easy to focus (smooth but a bit slow brand new) and seems comfortable in my hands.

wow, is it fast!

those 60mm ND filters can't get here soon enough. no one locally had any 60mm.

Interesting. I own the Cron and Nocti. The Cron is very cool compared to the Nocti. I love the warmth of the Nocti!

All the best...

The first time I used my 50 Cron I was really smitten with the warmth of color it produced as that look is more to my liking. The 50 lux to me does not give me that same feeling of warmth of image.

Also with the better ISO with the M240 you can easily over come the 1 stop difference between the two lenses with ISO adjustments.
