Life & Death In The City

It's a hard life being a squirrel. There's the traffic, the long, bitter winters, ferrel cats. And now, even Cooper's Hawks have taken up residence in town. I was amazed at how close this hawk let me get before taking off with its dinner. This was shot with a 50mm lens, although it is cropped in a bit. M Mono

can you tell us more about how you got this shot? Amazing- the angle of the camera is superb- I can't get that low any more- fake hip- did you squat? is that what you did?

Really neat shot and an amazing moment in time for you- thanks!!

Thanks very much for the comments.

Ben, I actually was standing upright when I took these. I had the camera to my eye and kept walking toward the hawk, which just stayed there until I was within about two meters. I was probably crouched a bit but definitely not at ground level. I think the reason it stayed so long was that it couldn't fly with the squirrel and was reluctant to leave its prey. After I passed by it immediately flew back to start eating the squirrel.

Thanks very much for all the comments.

The extraordinary sharpness and detail of the MM....love it!

And so...what 50mm lens did you use?

Dee--It's the 50mm Summilux asph. I use that lens more than any other. If I'm just carrying a body and one lens, that's almost always the one I have.

Brent,

Great shots and a most rewarding spectacle to see in person.

Brent and Bill,

This summer my wife and I were at the kitchen table looking through our patio door when a golden hawk descended on our deck railing post with a cardinal in its mouth. It stood there for a few minutes and flew away as I got my camera out but before I could get any shots. That was an incredible sight.

Paul--That's a sight I wouldn't want to see. The Cardinal is one of my favorite birds. I love seeing and hearing them. Sparrows, on the other hand, are so plentiful that I don't mind at all seeing a hawk take them. Still, seeing a sight like that would certainly be impressive.
